The Scoop: Dominant Sprinters, Quarter-Mile Futures And State Championships Galore

The Ohio State Indoor Meet Rundown

Who were the biggest winners from the OATCCC State Indoor Championships?

Thomas Worthington (OH) High's Andy Payne for starters.

Payne had to fight off a tough battle from Hudson's Adam Beucler throughout much of the final laps, but he took control with two laps to go and claimed his first indoor championship in an indoor best of 9:10.97. It was a nearly three-second PR from his fourth-place effort at the championship last year.

How'd Payne do it? He didn't wait. He made his move at a vital time and didn't let Buecler sneak back into the picture. Adam Buecler (9:13.65) and Josh Hill (9:19.65) only hoped to hang on. In Division II, the time even surpassed Zach Kreft's winning effort of 9:20.57. The Buckeye Valley and Notre Dame signee cruised to the line 12 seconds ahead of his next competitor.

Notes:

  • Centerville's Yariel Soto doubled in the pole vault and 400m, breaking 50 seconds for the third straight outing in 49.25; he also vaulted 15-9
  • Westerville Central's boys went US No. 4 in the 4x200 in 1:28.26
  • Olentangy Orange's boys executed on a US No. 3 effort in the 4x800, going 7:47.47
  • Whitmer's Nathan Cousino made a winning move in the 800m, earning top 10 time of 1:52.69
  • Dustin Horter, doing his usual thing, went a US No. 1 time in the 1600m of 4:07.52

And how about Brush (OH) High's Quentin Woodall? It's safe to say the senior had his best 60mH effort.

He didn't break 8 seconds once in 2017 and only had done it once heading into the state meet. But he finished with a prelim time of 7.97 -- boosting confidence -- and then dropped a winning and US No. 7 effort of 7.88 seconds, a PR by 0.07 seconds.

Notes:

  • We couldn't forget Dublin Coffman's Abby Steiner, either. She completed her fourth straight title bid in the 200m, winning in 23.75 seconds.
  • Beavercreek's Taylor Ewert, a national record holder in the racewalk, won her first 3200m title in 10:40.38.
  • Pickerington Central's girls outran Gahanna Lincoln for the 4x200 title in a US No. 10 time of 1:41.12 (Lincoln was second in 1:41.99, though they won in the 4x400 in 3:55.93)
