New York's Distance Gals Went Through States Like A Breeze
It's no secret. New York has just sort of owned the GIRLS distance events over the 2018 indoor season.
That remained true this weekend.
Three US No. 1 times went down and another effort was a US No. 2.
Like usual, North Rockland (NY) High sophomore Katelyn Tuohy was upping her previous bests, hitting for a new best in the 1500m of 4:23.38, which topped her previous sophomore class record at the distance.
Just as impressive, perhaps, were US No. 1 runs by Spencerport's Vanessa Watson in the 600m (1:30.09) and Ursuline High's Lily Flynn in the 1000m (2:45.83).
Watson had to fight off a late charge by Benjamin Cardozo's Paris Peoples, the returning champion, who followed in 1:30.59. After finishing fourth a season ago, Watson silenced the crowd with her winning effort, dropping over a second from her best time of the season (1:31.56).
Flynn, meanwhile, surprised with a win over favorite Katherine Lee of Shoreham-Wading, running what will go down as a NY No. 2 all-time and a US No. 8 effort in indoor prep history. Only Rush Henrietta (NY) High's Sammy Watson has gone faster in the state, producing a national record of 2:40.72 in 2017.
And then we couldn't forget about Saratoga Springs (NY) High's Kelsey Chmiel, who dropped a US No. 2 effort in the 3000m of 9:27.88. But we already know how good she is.
Oh yeah, and MileSplit50 No. 1 Lanae-Tava Thomas won three titles in the 55m (6.86), 300m (38.63) and long jump (20-4.5).
