Weekend Rundown: Texas Shows Off Depth At State Meet

Wayzata Double The Trouble

Wayzata (MN) High senior Khalid Hussein earned his first Minnesota High School League Class AA title on Saturday, taking the boys championship race in 15:22.6 while his squad earned a dominant team win beside him, scoring 37 points.

Wayzata's boys had a stunning 40-second spread between its scorers and a 15:51 average, blitzing second-place Stillwater (79) and third-place Edina (107).

Roseville Area's Acer Iverson was second overall in 15:31.8, while Rosemount's Luke Labatte was third in 15:40.8.

Wayzata had two runners in the top 10 and four in the top 20.

The Trojan girls,  meanwhile, doubled the school pride, winning the title on the other side, scoring 51 points to Edina's 72.

Sophomore Emma Atkinson was third overall in 17:57.6 as the team scored three runners in the top 20 and averaged 18:34 over a 62-second spread.

In a crazy battle to the finish between the top two finishers, it was Minneapolis Washburn's Emily Covert
who edged Farmington freshman and defending champion Anna Fenske at the line in 17:30.1. Fenske was second in 17:34.8.

Wolfgram Upsets Ping in Class A

Can you really say the defending champion upset anyone in her own race?

But in some ways, that's exactly what Math & Science Academy freshman Tierney Wolfgram did in the Class A race, scoring a big win in 17:31.6.

Winonan Cotter freshman Grace Ping finished third in 18:27.5, while her seventh-grade sister, Lauren, was second in 18:19.7. Reportedly Grace Ping was dealing with a nagging leg issue.

And to make matters more frustrating, the Ping's Cotter squad finished second overall by one point to Perham, 86-87.
