Saturday Stories From New Balance Nationals

Canada's Huggins Closes The Gap Late

No lead is big enough.

That’s what Canada’s Dallyssa Huggins proved in the Heptathlon on Saturday.

Huggins trailed second-day leader Brittany McGee of Admiral Farragut (FL) by 300 points with just one event remaining, the 800-meter run. With a closing 2:12.71 split, she erased that deficit and earned the individual title with 4,957 points. That total was just 10 points ahead of Jordan Fields of St. John (FL), who was a mere point in front of McGee in third.

“I didn’t know how far I was behind first place. I just knew that the 800 was my best event and I had to come back,” she said.

Huggins set personal bests in the 100m hurdles (15.16) and the 200m (25.74) on the first day and also came an inch short of doing the same in the high jump where she still leaped an impressive height of 5 feet, 9.5 inches.

“The first day was going well,” she said. “Today, my long jump and javelin was not very good. That’s why I had to run well in the 800.”
