Friday Highlights from Penn Relays

Championship of America Boys Mile Run

Recap: After a 62 opening lap Drew Hunter (VA) worked his way to the front of the pack where he hit the halfway point in the lead, 800m split about 2:06. His tactics from New Balance Nationals Indoor of pushing the pace from the gun and not relinquishing the lead paid off tremendously with a US #6 all-time indoor 2mile of 8:48, but we saw different tactics today.

Hunter, not a mile specialist, worked off of Sam Ritz, Pennsylvania State Indoor Mile record holder, that third lap with Mikey Brannigan (NY), Diego Zarate (MD) tucked in behind him. On the backstretch of the final lap Hunter opened up his stride and took a shot for the lead. He powered in a strong kick from a longways out to win in 4:07.15 and gapping Brannigan (4:09.61), Zarate (4:09.69), and Ritz (4:09.94) about by about 2.5 seconds.

The junior Hunter joins elite company of Matthew Centrowitz, Jr. to become the only duo of preps to win two different individual distance titles at Penn Relays on different years.

Matthew Centrowitz, Jr: 3k in 2006 and Mile in 2007
Drew Hunter: 3k in 2014 and Mile in 2015
