8/23 High School XC Weekend Recap

At the Providence Invitational in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, Kayla Holder of Wake Forest won the invitational girls race in a time of 18:13. Last week's Wake County Kickoff winner was followed in by Maddie McHugh of Haugh in second at 18:19, and Cardinal Gibbons breakout freshmen Marissa Bishop came in 3rd place with a time of 18:30.

In a matchup between two of the state's best programs for girls, the Green Hope girls claimed the team title with 78 points compared to the runners-up from Cardinal Gibbons with 112 points. Cardinal Gibbons had better front running from the freshmen Bishop and junior Sophie Ebihara (6th, 18:44), but Green Hope was a better packed unit with only 45 seconds separating their top five from #1 runner Elly Henes (11th, 19:16) to #5 runner Theresa Enright (27th, 20:01).

In the invitational boys race, Philip Hall of South View won his first race at his new high school with an early season national leading 5K time of 15:19 at McAlpine Greenway Park. Finishing 12 seconds after Hall for second place was Broughton junior Jeremy Brown in a time of 15:33.

In a potential changing of the guard for supremacy in the state of North Carolina, the Cardinal Gibbons boys (50 pts) knocked off the Broughton boys (69 pts) for the team title at the Providence Invite. Cardinal Gibbons put 4 runners in the top 10 and nearly the same number under 16 minutes for 5K with Connor Lane (15:50), David Edwards (6th, 15:53), JT Klimek (7th, 15:54), and Connor Peeples (10th, 16:01).  Sam Greick (24th, 16:25) and Will Harris (25th, 16:26) were their next two finishers to round out their top 6.
