CIF California State Cross Country Championships, CA

Highlights

  • NXN Boys - Arcadia and Madera South get the Auto qualifier bids from California.
  • NXN Girls - Great Oak and Simi Valley get the Auto bids on the girls side.
  • Division 1 Girls - Great Oak lived up to promise and won the girls team title with 76 points.  Davis was 2nd with 149, Trabuco Hills was 3rd with 154 and Capistrano Valley was 4th with 157.  Individually, Fiona O'Keeffe (Davis) won while just a sophomore with a time of 16:59.  Marissa Williams (Palisades Charter) was 2nd in 17:04 and Destiny Collins led Great Oak with a 3rd place finish in 17:09.
  • Division 1 Boys - What a great team battle it was here, but the boys from Arcadia prove they can race gutsy when it counts and won with 59 points.  Madera South raced hard and took the 2nd spot with 88 points while Dana Hills finished 3rd with 132 points.  Warren, a pre-meet threat to Arcadia, took 4th with 145 points.  Tal Braude (Torrey Pines) continued his great season by winning it all in 15:02.  Estevan De La Rosa (Arcadia) gave him all he had to finish 2nd in 5:03.  Blake Haney (Stockdale) finished 3rd in 15:09 while Blair Hurlock (De La Salle) finished great for 4th in 15:11.  Phillip Rocha (Arcadia) ran well for 5th in 15:18.  
  • Division 2 Girls - Sarah Baxter (Simi Valley) made history for being a 4-time state champion, and she did so with the fastest time of the day, a 16:43 clocking!  She is undefeated in high school cross country as of today!  Addi Zerrenher (Dos Pueblos) was 2nd in 17:18 and Samantha Ortego (Saugus) was 3rd in 17:27.  Simi Valley got the best of Saugus, but just barely as the score was 97 to 102.  Redondo Union was 3rd with 137 while La Costa Canyon finished 4th with 139.
  • Division 2 Boys - Garrett Corcoran (Villa Park) won big in this one with a time of 15:09.  Andrew Tellames (Orange Glen) was 2nd in 15:20 and Mikey Giguere (Westlake) was 3rd in 15:21.  Saugus won the team title with 110 points and Westlake was 2nd with 139 points.  Dos Pueblos snagged 3rd in a close battle with Canyon 154 to 155.
  • Division 3 Girls - Bethan Knights (Northwood) dominated here and won by 43 seconds with a time of 17:08.  Campolindo won the team crown with 83 points.  Northwood narrowly got 2nd with 127 points over Palos Verdes with 128 points.  
  • Division 3 Boys - Aidan Goltra (Campolindo) surprised the favorites in the end, winning with a huge kick in 15:02.  David Luna (Indio) was 2nd in 15:03 and Austin Tamagno (Brea Olinda) was 3rd in 15:03 as well.  Fred Huxham (Redwood) was 4th in 15:08.  Jurupa Hills surprised Brea Olinda with a great run to win 68 to 83.  
  • Division 4 Girls - Anna Maxwell (San Lorenzo Valley) ran away with this one, winning in 17:08, winning by 44 seconds.  San Lorenzo Valley also took the team crown with 86 points in a big victory over Laguna Beach with 189 points.
  • Division 4 Boys - Yreka won the team crown easily with 102 points but Laguna Beach narrowly snagged 2nd with 148 points as Salesian got 3rd with 149 points.  Caleb Webb (Big Bear) won the individual title with a time of 15:15.
  • Division 5 Girls - Julia Maxwell (Branson) won the individual title with ease in 18:12 and Branson won the team title with 70 points.  
  • Division 5 Boys - Alan Yoho (Flintridge Prep) won the individual title with a time of 15:11 and St. Joseph Notre Dame won the team title with just 64 points.

  • Boys Championship - Mike Brannigan won the individual title with a time of 15:29.9 over TJ Hornberger in 15:40.8.  Josh Dryland was 3rd in 15:42.6, Bryce Millar was 4th in 15:45.2 and Andrew Berge was 5th in 15:45.7.  Fayetteville-Manlius boys are off to nationals, winning with 48 points and Northport was 2nd with 76 points.  
  • Girls Championship - Annika Avery (NY) led a dominated Fay-Man squad, winning in 18:05.3 with Abbey Wheeler 2nd in 18:25.4  Alana Pearl was 3rd in 18:33.1, Sophia Tasselmyer was 4th in 18:34.8 and Erin Jaskot was 5th in 18:38.2.  Fayetteville-Manlius (NY) is back to their dominate selves, winning the team title with a mere 32 points over Saratoga Springs with 88 points.

  • Boys Championship - Tony Russell (PA) defended his individual title, winning with a time of 15:46.4 over Tom O'Neill (NJ) in 15:47.8.  Mike McClemens (NJ) led CBA with his third place finish in 15:49.0.  Christian Stafford was 4th in 15:50.9 and Trevor Hopper was 5th in 15:53.5.  Christian Brothers Academy (NJ) qualified for nationals with an impressive showing, scoring 85 points.  West Chester Henderson (PA) finished 2nd with 114 points.
  • Girls Championship - Courtney Smith (PA) won the girls title with a time of 17:58.9.  Abbie McNulty (MA) finished 2nd in 18:03.5 with Autumn Eastman (VT) 3rd in 18:27.6.  Emma McMillan was 4th in 18:31.1 and Olivia Young was 5th in 18:36.9.  Unionville (PA) won the team title with 85 points and Pennsbury grabbed the other auto spot with 101 points.

  • Girls Championship - Nora McUmber won the girls race in 17:34.3, Ellie Gonazalez was 2nd in 17:47 and Elly Henes was 3rd in 17:48.1.  The girls of Assumption (KY) won the team title and will be joined at nationals by Blacksburg (VA).
  • Boys Championship - Taylor Caldwell led the way for Brentwood with his win in 15:05.70.  Tommy Mulroy finished 2nd in 15:07.20 while Tyler Spear was 3rd in 15:07.90.  Brentwood (TN) won the team battle and Severna Park (MD) will join them in Portland as they finished 2nd.

  • Boys Championships - Cerake Geberkidane (CO) won the boys individual title with a time of 15:17.  Connor Mantz (UT) finished 2nd in 15:22, Zachary Jacklin 3rd in 15:31, Andrew Brewer 4th in 15:31 and Mike Buckley 5th in 15:32.  American Fork (UT) won on the boys side with Davis (UT) finishing 2nd to make it an all Utah affair.  
  • Girls Championship - Elise Cranny (CO) won the individual crown with ease in a quick 17:03 clocking.  Lucy Biles (UT) was 2nd in 17:36.  Katie Rainsberger (CO) finished 3rd in 17:48 and Dani Jones (AZ) wound up 4th in 17:48.  Fort Collins (CO) won the girls race by the narrowest of margins over Davis (UT) 73 to 74!

  • Girls Championship - Paige Hofstad won the individual battle in 17:38 with Safiya Belbina 2nd in 17:48.  Ann Marie Dunlap finished 3rd in 17:52, Natalie Rathjen 4th in 17:54 and Madie Boreman 5th in 17:54.  New Braunfels girls won the team crown with 76 points and will qualify for nationals along with The Woodlands with 101 points in 2nd.  Southlake Carroll finished 3rd with 107 points.  
  • Boys Championship - Southlake Carroll boys took the team win with 90 points to qualify for nationals.  Also automatically in are the boys from Hebron who finished second with 131 points.  The Woodlands finished third wtih 138 points.  Jacob Shiohira (AR) won the individual title with a time of 15:28.  Frank Lara was 2nd in 15:31 with Ward 3rd in 15:36.  Barrett was 4th in 15:37 and Hendricksin was 5th in 15:37 as well.

Werner out to a big lead, hung on for the win in the girls championship race.

The boys pack was tight and it came down to the wire with Carmel taking the team win.

Highlights

  • Girls Championship Race: Taylor Werner (Ste. Genevieve MO) ran away from the gun to win the girls race in muddy and very windy conditions in a time of 18:36.2.  She survived a late race scare from Jamie Kempfer (Festus MO), who finished 2nd in 18:42.1, but was never really in a position to lose this race.  Mary Abramson finished 3rd in 18:48.5 and Kelcy Welch (Carmel IN) was 4th in 18:48.6.  Carmel (IN) girls won overall with 66 points and will head to nationals along with Naperville North in 2nd with 125 points.  Palatine (IL) girls were 3rd with 148 points and Columbus North (IN) girls were 4th with 156 points.
  • Boys Championship Race: Evan Stifel (St. Xavier OH) did his best to get his team to the national dance, winning overall with a time of 16:03.70.  Jesse Reiser (McHenry IL) finished 2nd overall in 16:11.10.  Zach Panning finished 3rd in 16:16.30 and Evan Schulte was 4th in 16:16.70.  Carmel (IN) won the boys team race with 103 points and St. Xavier (OH) finished 2nd with 120 points as both teams are off to nationals!  Hinsdale Central (IL), 199 points, and Columbus North (IN), 207 points, were 3rd and 4th.

  • Girls Championship Race: It was Alexa Efraimson (WA) and Makena Morley (MT) who dominated this race from the gun, pulling away before the first mile.  Efraimson pulled off the win with a course record 17:27.1 clocking as Morley finished in 17:36.0.  Ella Donaghu (OR) was 3rd in 17:59.7.  Bozeman (MT) ran for the kill, scoring just 78 points to win the girls race and secure a nationals berth.  Bellarmine Prep (WA) snagged the other auto berth with 133 points.
  • Boys Championship Race: Tanner Anderson (WA) had his hands all over this one, winning with a fast 15:19.4 clocking.  Elijah Armstrong (ID) proved his mettle by finishing 2nd overall with a quick 15:24.1 clocking.  Gig Harbor (WA) crushed everyone to earn their NXN berth with 68 points and a 16:12 average.  North Central (WA) earned the other auto berth by finishing 2nd with 111 points and a 16:13 average.

Highlights

  • Girls Championship Race - Bethany and Megan Hasz (MN) roll to a 1-2 finish!  Bethany was clocked in 17:17.5 for the win, a new course record, taking out Katie Flood's 17:19 from 2009.  Megan was 2nd in 17:21.5.  McKenzie Yanek (IA) finished 3rd in 17:43.4, Karissa Schweizer (IA) was 4th in 17:51.4 and Jenna Truedson (MN) finished 5th in 17:54.6.   Wayzata (MN) won the girls team title with 118 points to qualify for nationals and and East Ridge (MN) finished 2nd with 190 points and will join them.  
  • Boys Championship Race - Addison DeHaven (SD) won the individual race with a huge sprint battle over Obsa Ali (MN).  DeHaven broke Jake Leingang's 15:16 course record with his time of 15:08.9.  The top-4 were all under the record as well.  Ali came in at 15:11.6.  Stuart McNutt (KS) came on strong for 3rd with a time of 15:13.8, Chandler Austin (IA) was 4th in 15:14.7 and Albert Meier (IA) finished 5th in 15:18.6.  Edina came on strong in the last mile and took out Wayzata (MN) for the team title 106 to 135 as both teams qualify for nationals.
