It was a record breaking season for Brian Herron. He has become one of the greatest indoor sprinters in high school history and is well deserving of the first ever boys MileSplit50 Indoor Athlete of the Year.

Brodey Hasty had a very good case to be in the conversation with Herron, but didn't have the all time great marks to match up with the Georgia sprinter. While he may have to wait for outdoor to keep chasing the elusive sub-4, Hasty still closed his final indoor season strong. He anchored his Brentwood DMR to a title just shy of the national record. He also ran a perfect tactical race to win a title in the two mile.

A decent ending for his season, but Bullis had hoped for more entering the meet as the heavy favorites in the 4x2 and mixed 4x4. Eric Allen had one of the most consistent finishes of any athlete at nationals in all of his events. He posted three top three finishes in the 200m, 4x200m, and mixed relay.

Hoey accomplished enough the season to hold a place in the top five, but couldn't be in the mix for top three after deciding not to compete at nationals.

Ayden Owens has been one of the most consistent hurdlers on the season. He dominated the final to advance up to number four on the all time indoor list in the 60H. He also finished runner up to Kyle Garland to move into the top ten all time list in the pentathlon.

Entering the season as somewhat of an underdog, Austin Kratz brought home a national title in the 200m and finished third in the 60m behind the Florida duo.

The undisputed king of the short sprints. Anthony Schwartz ran the three fastest times of the year through the rounds in his first ever indoor competition and is now second all time in the 60m.

Really impressive to see Kyle Garland bounce back from an extended injury absence to still compete at a high level in so many events. He was second to Ayden Owens in the 60H final and won the pentathlon to move up to fourth all time behind Grant Holloway.

When life gives you lemons...break a national record. After being handed an "L" on the anchor leg of the DMR to start the weekend, Sam Affolder and Loudoun Valley responded in spectacular fashion by blowing away the field in a national record performance in the 4xMile. They also set a facility record while winning a national championship in the 4x8 where Affolder split an impressive 1:51.

Dustin Horter was undefeated during his indoor season and was the class of the field in the mile at nationals.

I was super bummed to see Ryan Oosting and his squad in the first section of the DMR at nationals instead of heat three with all of the fastest teams. Arlington was the only team outside of the third heat to place in the top ten. His 4:06.81 anchor was the second fastest of the entire event behind Nick Foster's 4:06.69. The two mile championship turned into an extremely tactical race. When Brodey Hasty turned on the pressure in the final laps everyone else in the field was dropped by decent margins but Oosting hung on to finish second just a second behind.

Isaiah Claiborne had a monster couple weeks to wrap up his indoor season. He helped Northport finish fourth overall in the DMR and third in the 4x800m at nationals. He also was fourth in the mile ahead of Scott Thompson.

Flight400 was all over the top of the boys sprint results from nationals in both the championship and EE races. The focus in the 400m final was put on the Brian Herron vs Tyrese Cooper matchup, but when Cooper pulled out after the first lap, Ramey took over to make it a sweep for his club (making Bryan's wild MileSplitLive prediction come true). Ramey now joins a very elite and short list of athletes who have run under 47s indoors. His performance earns him a place in the top ten all time.

Trey Knight hadn't compete often indoors prior to this season so his rise in the MileSplit50 was dependent on his performances in NYC. He won the weight throw by a substantial margin as was expected, but more impressive was the sophomore from Washington also placing third in the shot put. This now makes him the best combined thrower of the indoor season.

The boys 4x400m had me on the edge of my seat watching Miles Green chase down East Orange to bring back the national title to PA. Green also finished fourth in the 400m with a new indoor PR and just a few tenths off of his outdoor PR as well.

Jequan Hogan showed his versatility at nationals with a win in the TJ and a US top ten mark in the championship high jump. His 6-10.75 clearance is tied with three other athletes for the fourth best of the competition but he finished seventh based on fouls. I know people don't want to hear much about outdoor here, but Hogan just recorded the second best wind legal TJ ever in the month of March...just food for thought.

Going into nationals I knew Mason Gatewood and the St. Anthony's team had a legit shot at the DMR title, but I was really impressed with how he was able to drop some really talented runners in Sam Affolder and Isaiah Claiborne on the anchor leg to finish second behind Brodey Hasty.

Ian Delgado has been hovering around 40-50 for much of the season but finally had his breakout performances against national competition to warrant a significant jump. He anchored his team to second in the 4x800m just behind Affolder and Loudoun Valley. Going back to the NC State Meet, Delgado has shown he has a lethal kick and good 400m speed. We saw that in both of his races at nationals. In the 800m it looked like he may have just left the kick a little too late and finished second in the 800m. His 1:51.06 is good for number three in the country this season and he also split a 1:50 on his 4x8 anchor leg.

Heartbreak for Tyrese Cooper at nationals. He ran top three times in the 200m and 400m prelims but pulled off after the first lap in the 400m final. Being unable to finish a final at nationals, he couldn't remain in the top 20 with athletes who competed well in the championship races. But Cooper still dominated his regular season races and deserves to be highly ranked.

It was a weekend of highs and lows for Kurt Powdar. His team took home a national title in the SHR and he actually ran the fastest time of the year in the 60H semis, but unfortunately got a false start in the final and was unable to race Owens or Garland for the win. His semis time still holds up for the second best time of the year behind Owens' winning mark in the final.

As always, the sprints were loaded at nationals. Okheme Moore was unable to advance to the 60m final, but he qualified in the 200m. He was seeded into the slow heat but impressively posted the third fastest time overall behind Austin Kratz and Eric Allen.

Definitely a successful trip for the sophomore to indoor nationals. He qualified for both the 60m and 200m finals. He was ninth in the 60m and fourth in the 200m just behind Okheme Moore.

Kevin Snyder didn't get the 50' jump he was hoping for but I was impressed with his weekend as a whole. He's been one of the top triple jumpers all year, so it wasn't surprising to see him take third there. The big shock was seeing him also take third place in the long jump while PRing by over a foot! No other jumper placed in the top three in both events.

I've been keeping my eye on Randolph Ross because he could be developing into one of the most versatile athletes in the HS track. He showed some range at nationals by qualifying for the final in the 400m and finishing fourth in the high jump.

American Heritage is tearing up the outdoor season right now and there's no confusion as to why. Tyson Campbell blew up indoor nationals with his teammate Anthony Schwartz and they swept the 60m final away from athletes who have been running the event for years.

EXPLAINING MILESPLIT50:
These are subjective rankings of the top 50 athletes across all indoor track and field events. Feel free to reach out to MileSplit via email (travis.miller@flosports.tv) or on Twitter (@milesplit or @TravisMillerFlo)
Here are the attributes MileSplit considered when ranking athletes (in no particular order):
- IAAF points for ballpark numbers to compare performances across different events
- PRs
- Returning indoor track & field rankings
- Significant wins/results in previous indoor seasons
- More weight on "championship" events (I took stats and performances from ALL events into consideration, but championship events are more important at the national level)
- Participation in relays
- 2018 indoor track & field results
- Indoor competition frequency (these are rankings for indoor track & field, not necessarily the best all around XC/indoor/outdoor athletes)
