Team Virginia truly showed out this weekend and proved once again that those from the Commonwealth of Virginia are truly the kings and queens of 400s. Representing Virginia were 16 athletes in 19 entered events these past few weeks at the USATF Olympic Team Trials. Against the toughest competition in the world, recent T.C. Williams alum, Noah Lyles raced his best when it mattered most. Though he finished just shy of making the US Olympic team in fourth place, he did cross the line in a wind-legal 20.09 to break Roy Martin's 31 year old 200m national record.
One of Florida's most beloved alumni Jenny Simpson (Barringer) won her first ever US Olympic Trials with a time of 4:04.79 to take gold in the 1,500m at historic Hayward Field and earn a spot on Team USA at the Olympic Games in Rio. This will be the second Olympic Games for Simpson who failed to qualify for the 2012 Games in London.

Recent high school graduates Noah Lyles and Michael Norman made the Olympic Trials 200m final
Noah and Josephus Lyles are one of the most talented sibling sprint duos in prep history. The Florida Gator recruits both qualified for the Olympic Trials, but an injury kept Josephus out of competition this spring. Noah won his 200m prelim and semi final before placing fourth in the final with a wind-legal time of 20.09 to break the national high school record and just miss a spot to Rio. Josephus describes watching the race from the stands.
After winning his prelim and semi final sections of the 200m at the Olympic Trials, Noah Lyles placed fourth in the final. He narrowly missed out on a spot to Rio, but he broke the national high school record with a wind-legal mark of 20.09.
The injured star was more nervous for the race than his brother
In a dramatic lean at the finish line, Justin Gatlin won the 200m final in the second fastest time in the world this year Saturday at Hayward Field. Out of lane eight, Gatlin beat world leader LaShawn Merritt with a winning time of 19.75 seconds. After winning the 400m title earlier in the week, Merritt finished second in 19.79 and was followed by Ameer Webb who closed for third in 20.00.
