Meet Preview

The best of Ontario’s track and field student-athletes will be at York University this weekend as the York Lions host the OUA Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the Toronto Track and Field Centre from February 24-25.

Friday’s action kicks off with the men’s weight throw at 12:30 p.m., and events will run throughout the day until approximately 9 p.m., following the men’s pentathlon. Day two will begin with the women’s weight throw. The Championship culminates on Saturday at 5 p.m., following the men and women’s 4x400m relays.

The Windsor Lancers have created a dynasty on the men’s side, winning 20 of the last 21 championship banners. They are ranked No. 1 heading into this weekend, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Lancers finished at the top of the podium this weekend. However, the Lancers have their work cut out for them, as OUA schools hold the top five spots in the national poll.

On the women’s side, the Lancers have taken home the title the last two seasons, and are ranked No. 2. The Guelph Gryphons, notorious for their track program, have been shut out the past two seasons, and will look to recreate their 2008-2009 banner year. The Gryphons are ranked No. 1 in the national poll, and will be Windsor’s main challenge.

Though there are front-runners, fourteen OUA schools will compete at this weekend’s championship and the field is highly competitive. A number of athletes have already posted CIS qualifying times, and will appear at the national championship hosted by the University of Manitoba, from March 8-10. All athletes who achieve the CIS qualifying standard in their respective events will advance to the national meet, as will all gold and silver medalists from the OUA championships.
