The tremendous distances, and expense of the "super regions," has been discussed at length. However, remembering a 3A Region 1, about 8-9 years ago, that got partially stormed out on a Friday, and we had to come back on a Monday to finish it, what if... Yup, what do you do with your hotel rooms, charter bus, meal money costs, if the meet is stormed out partially, or entirely, and you have to stay an extra day, or come back a day or two later? That time of year it is well within the realm of possibility!

almost certainly any region will have to go the next day... not three days later...this happens every now and then and has happened at a few state meets over the years.

The next day....maybe. The aforementioned storm continued throughout the next day, and the venue was underwater until Sunday. Hence, back on Monday.

I've got a solution for several of your problems! It will eliminate excessive travel costs and time missed from school. Simply do away with region and state meets entirely. Continue to have district meets and simply take the 8 best times/distance in each event across all districts and combine them to score a virtual state meet. This will also allow every athlete that participates at district to be a part of the state competition, what could be better than that!
And CoachRaposo in 5...4....3.... 2....
@jason I'm doing my best to behave! LOL I've already said my piece on a different post. Financially, among other reasons, double regions make no sense. Additionally, you know I've been anti at-large bids for many years now, and forcing all meets to be on the same day DOES NOT equate to competing head-to-head in any capacity whatsoever. Oh well.

@jason Finally some sanity has been shared! There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way we have qualified for years!

@Wolfbear A rain out of 1A-2A and bringing them back the next day with 3A-4A creates a State Meet situation without the At-Large athletes. A real mess plus added expense!

@TJump69 Here is just one example of what is wrong with the way we have qualified for years: Last year, in 2A Region 4, a young lady who ran 5:01.40 finished 5th in the 1600m at the regional meet, and as such did not qualify to compete at the state championship in this event. Meanwhile, a girl who ran 5:34 in 2A Region 3 finished 4th and earned a chance to race at the state meet. If it is supposed to be a state championship, shouldn't you have the best athletes in the state competing, and not simply the top 4 from each region? The new procedures will allow the best athletes to compete, regardless of where they live, and will still allow those who finish in the top 4 of each region to run, jump, or throw at the state championship as well.

@goldilox And the USA, Russia, Kenya, Ethiopia have more than 3 or 4 runners that can qualify for the Olympics...but guess what, they don't all get to go. I like at large bids, but not the increase to the meet...make it top 2 auto qualify with 8 at large bids...

@Raycer131 The way it was originally proposed to FHSAA - top 3 from each region and 4 at-large bids - would work too. I just don't see how you exclude one of the top runners in the state just because she lives in the most competitive region. Heck, she's on the podium at state's with the time she ran at regions, if we still had a podium, that is. But that's a whole different can of worms...
