JACKSON SPENCER | MEN'S MILE

Jackson Spencer ran 3:57.34 to finish 13th in the men's mile. Liam Murphy won in 3:50.49.

Spencer attends Herriman High School in Utah and is committed to BYU. He did not lose a single high school race this year. He won the NXN and Brooks cross country national titles last fall, won the 5000m at New Balance Nationals Indoor in 13:54.70 in March, set the national high school 3200m record at Arcadia in 8:31.80, broke four minutes in the mile in April, then ran 3:57.24 at the St. Louis Festival of Miles in June, fifth on the all-time U.S. list.

He came to Eugene with Alan Webb's 25-year-old record of 3:53.43 in his sights. Webb set it at this exact meet in 2001, running as a high schooler against Hicham El Guerrouj, the world record holder, and closing with a 55-second final lap as the crowd at Hayward Field turned its full attention away from El Guerrouj and toward a teenager from Virginia who was making history in fifth place. Spencer ran 3:57, still closed well, and still walks away from the high school year without a loss. The record remains. He starts at BYU in the fall.
