Sunday at Hayward Field belonged to athletes who weren't satisfied with just one race, or one throw. A Saturday podium finisher came back to win a different event entirely. A freshman swept both sprints. And a discus thrower who has now won three different titles at three different meets this season added a fourth. Here is what happened on day four.
Melanie Doggett Completes the Sweep
A day after winning the Girls 100m Championship as a freshman, Melanie Doggett came back and won the Girls 200m Championship too, running 22.48 (+1.9), tying the national freshman class record and landing fifth on the all-time U18 world list. She beat a field that included Mariah Maxwell, who finished fifth. The number carries its own history. It is the exact time Tamari Davis ran as a freshman at the 2018 Florida state meet, a run that set the same national freshman class record and stood as the third-fastest 200m in U.S. high school history at the time. Doggett matched it to the hundredth, eight years later. She also ran a leg on Major Impact TC's 4x100m relay, which finished second in 45.67.
More sprinters doubled back. Jayden Deleon, who upset Quincy Wilson to win the USATF U20 400m title in a meet-record 44.52 on Friday, came back two days later and won the Boys 200m Championship at Nike Outdoor Nationals in 20.68. Jayson Jones, the Norcross, Georgia sophomore who won the actual Boys 400m Championship on Saturday in 45.99, finished third in that same 200m final in 20.84.
Josh Hamblin Adds a Second Title
A day after finishing fourth in the deepest 110m hurdles final of the season, Josh Hamblin of North Ogden, Utah turned around and won the Boys 400m Hurdles Championship in 50.28. The Weber High senior, who already held Utah state records in both hurdle events this spring, walked away from Eugene with a national title in an event that wasn't even his marquee race a day earlier.
Anna Schneidler won the Girls 400m Hurdles Championship in 59.21, just ahead of Chloe Senefeld's 59.27.
Simon Rosselli Does It Again
Simon Rosselli's spring has been a tour through the country's biggest discus competitions, and he keeps winning. He won the Arcadia Invitational in April with a throw that ranked fifth all-time in high school history. He won the Men's Discus U20 title on Friday at 62.67m. On Sunday he won the Boys Discus Championship outright with a throw of 68.78m (225-8), the best mark in the country this year. CJ Williams, the Texas state record holder, finished second at 65.80m (215-10).
The Mile Races Were Full of Familiar Names
Abdinasir Hassan, the Colorado sophomore who broke into the sub-14 5000m club at Bryan Clay this spring and set the RunningLane 3200m meet record earlier this month, won the Boys 1 Mile Championship in 4:01.88, with a rabbit setting the pace through 800m in 1:59. Quinn Sullivan, who lost a thriller to Jay McDonald at the Colorado state meet in May, finished third in 4:03.93. Dylan Rowell, who won the Boys 2 Mile Championship a day earlier and broke four minutes at Brooks PR this month, was fourth in 4:04.20.
Ellie Barada won the Girls 1 Mile Championship in 4:34.25. Chiara Dailey, who won the Brooks PR Invitational 2-mile in a battle with Mia Sirois earlier this month, finished second in 4:34.89. Aelo Curtis, who added a Brooks PR mile title in May, was third in 4:41.21.
Field Events and Relays Closed the Day
Zahkarri McGlothin won the Boys Long Jump Championship at 7.71m (25-3.50). Mckaylen Lewis won the Girls Long Jump Championship at 6.31m (20-8.50). Hunter Pitcavage won the Boys Javelin Championship at 68.28m (224-0), and Anna Millikan won the Girls Javelin Championship at 49.04m (160-10). Kimberly Beard won the Girls Hammer Throw Championship at 59.70m (195-10).
Woodlawn (MD) won the Girls 4x100m Championship in 46.93. La Canada St. Francis (CA) won the Boys 4x100m Championship in 42.07. IMG Elite (FL) won the Girls 4x400m Championship in 3:45.57, and SF Lincoln took the Boys 4x400m Championship in 3:13.13.
Day four is in the books. The doubles, the drama, there was everything.
