HIGH SHCOOL | LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING AHEAD
The high school season is winding down, but a few of the biggest names from the spring are still making news.
Paige Sheppard ran 2:00.65 at the Brooks PR Invitational last weekend - US#7 all-time in the high school girls 800m and a new Brooks PR meet record. The national record is starting to feel like a real possibility and the one still standing belongs to Mary Cain, 1:59.19 set in 2014. Sheppard needs to drop 1.46 seconds and has has the opportunity because she is a junior, so she will be back.
MORE FROM SHEPPARD
Andrew Jones ran 13.14 at Brooks PR - the second-fastest wind-legal 110m hurdles time in US high school history, behind only Wayne Davis's national record of 13.08 from 2009. Jones had a season that included the national record in the 300m hurdles (34.72), the first-ever sub-13 all-conditions 110m hurdles performance (12.97), and a Brooks PR meet record.
MORE REFLECTIONS
Andrew Beroset of McCallie came within a second of becoming the first Tennessee high school runner to break four minutes in the mile - twice in two weekends. He moved to No. 1 on the Tennessee all-time list, breaking Brodey Hasty's mark of 4:01.75 set in 2017. His mile converts to 3:59.28 for 1600m. More opportunity is still to come.
Cole Zielinski of Waukesha West, Wisconsin jumped 25-9.5 in the long jump, breaking a Wisconsin state record that had stood since 1965. There was no wind reading, but all other performances at the meet came in between -1.3 and +1.7. The record books won't reflect it without a reading, even though the jump happened.
