College freshmen Shelby Greany of Providence College and Robby Andrews of the University of Virginia will try to make the U.S. team for this summer’s World Junior Championships, to be held next month in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada.
Greany, who graduated a year ago from Suffern High School in New York, will compete in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. She broke the American Junior (under age 20) record in the event twice last week at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., eventually running 10:00.88 to finish 6th in the final.
Andrews, from Manalapan, N.J., was runnerup to Oregon’s Andrew Wheating in the NCAA 800. He ran 1:45.54 in the prelims there, the 3rd-fastest ever by an American Junior. The AJR is 1:44.9 set by Jim Ryun of Kansas 44 years ago. It was the fastest qualifying time ever run at the NCAAs.
The USATF Senior and Junior national championships will be held next Wednesday through Sunday at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
For the Senior competitors, there is no major U.S. team to qualify for, because there are no World Championships or Olympic Games this season. As a result, some star athletes will skip this year’s meet, or may run an “off” event. Allyson Felix, for example, has entered the 100 meters rather than the 200 or 400, her specialties. The sprinters Tyson Gay and Carmelita Jeter have not submitted entries for the meet, although a few days still remain.
The New York Athletic Club is sending a sizable contingent, led by middle-distance runners Rob Novak, Sean Tully and Erin Donohue; throwers Jake Freeman, Kibwe Johnson, Kristal Yush, Jillian Camarena, Loree Smith and Liz Wanless, and racer walker Tim Seaman. Novak, the Seton Hall graduate, who is planning to move up from the 800 to the 1,500, has entered both events. In the last month he has run PRs in both, 1:46.85 and 3:40.90.
Other competitors from New York-area clubs include Nicole Dumpson (IH) and Bridgette Ingram (heptathlon) of the LeMans Track Club, Barry Krammes (javelin) and Erin Taylor (race walk) of the Shore AC, and Dustin Emrani (800) of the Central Park TC.
Freeman and Johnson are among the hammer favorites along with New Yorker Walter Henning, the recent NCAA winner for LSU.
Other local collegians entered in the Senior division include Sharay Hale (400) and Jeff Moriarty (800) of Columbia, Priscilla Frederick (HJ) of St. John’s, Don Cabral (steeple) of Princeton and New Yorker Lance Roller (800) of Virginia.
In the Juniors meet, in addition to Andrews and Greany, a number of other locals stand a chance of making the national squad, including Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall), the defending champion in the 5,000; Jen Clayton (Suffern), long jump; Nick Vena (Morristown, NJ) in the shot; hammer throwers Alec Faldermeyer (Minisink Valley) and Conor McCullough (Princeton), and halfmiler Charlene Lipsey (Hempstead/LSU).
