While throwers and sprinters may have opinions about the differences between indoor and outdoor track, mid-distance runners might be one of the few event groups with little to complain about during the indoor season.
Why? Simply put, indoor track offers them more options.
Outdoors, mid-distance athletes are largely confined to the 400m and 800m, and sometimes the mile. Indoors, however, the menu expands. Events like the 500m, 600m, and 1000m give athletes the freedom to experiment, whether they want to stretch their range or sharpen their speed without fully committing to longer distances.
Just three weeks into the new year, more and more athletes have dusted off their spikes and taken to the indoor oval, with many already testing themselves across multiple events.
