In an era of racing that has such a large emphasis on times, we occasionally forget why we race - to win. Winning races has become an afterthought in cross country, yet it could be argued is all that matters in our beautiful sport.

Porter Gaud's Morgan Howell (SC) scored her third victory of the season at the Mike Moore Classic in September, running a 17:16.60, which was the 22nd fastest 5K race win by an underclassmen girl this season. The freshman finished her first high school cross country season with six wins, including a 53-second victory at the South Carolina XC State Championships.
