Jane Hedengren continues to redefine high school distance running, delivering a historic performance at the 2025 Nike Indoor Nationals by smashing the national high school indoor 5K record with a jaw-dropping time of 15:13.26. The previous mark of 15:28.90, set by Elizabeth Leachman in March 2024, stood for just over a year before Hedengren obliterated it with her relentless pace and endurance. This performance also marks a new U20 American record and places her 13th this year for the event at the senior level for American women.

Hedengren wasn't alone in making history, Rylee Blade also ran under the old record, finishing as the runner-up in 15:16.72. From the opening laps, the two asserted themselves at the front of the race, maintaining a blistering pace that quickly separated them from the rest of the field. Just after the mile mark, they began to break away, and by the time they hit the 2000m split, it was a two-runner duel to the finish. Blade matched Hedengren stride for stride for nearly the entire race, but in the final 100 meters, Hedengren unleashed a finishing surge to secure the win.

This record-breaking effort is just the latest in Hedengren's spectacular season. In February, she set the high school all-time best in the 3200m with a 9:37.50 performance at the Simplot Games-an achievement made even more remarkable by the fact that it came at 4,500 feet of elevation. That time placed her just seconds behind Mary Cain's legendary 2-mile indoor record when adjusted for altitude. Earlier in the season, she also clocked an impressive 4:36.23 mile at high elevation, further cementing her dominance across multiple distances.
As a senior, Hedengren has already solidified herself as one of the greatest high school distance runners of all time, but she still has ample time to continue rewriting the record books. With the outdoor season ahead, her legacy is far from finished, and more historic performances are almost certainly on the horizon.
