Jake Liebert historically had used the Raleigh Relays over the last two seasons to punch up a 3,200 meter performance.

On Thursday in Cary, North Carolina, he switched things up, stepping up in distance to 5,000 meters as he walked away with a new U.S. No. 1 time of 14:06.44.

The effort was a career defining one for Liebert, who also set a new South Carolina state record and the nation's No. 20 all-time performance, shuttling past former Cherry Creek (CO) star Parker Wolfe, who ran 14:06.48 in 2021.

In his first performance at 5,000 meters outdoors, Liebert finished sixth in heat five and was 68th overall.

He was also one of 82 athletes under 14:10 on the night. Liebert's previous best for 5K came over the cross country campaign in 14:43.67.
