Just how dramatic was the improvement for 1,600m and 3,200m runners this year?
Well, take the example of Ethan Hogan as a case study.
The Columbia (IL) High School junior was coming off a sophomore campaign where he clocked times of 4:28.20 in the 1,600m and 9:51.95 in the 3,200m.
He was a completely different athlete in 2023.
Hogan bulldozed his former marks as a junior, lowering his former time to 4:06.62 -- en route to a 4:08.35 full mile -- and his latter to 8:49.61.
Those efforts represented 21.58 and 53.87 second improvements year-over-year, ranking him No. 1 for that data set in the 1,600m and No. 4 in the 3,200m.
