Sophia Rodriguez Smashes Own Age 14 World Record At Nike

At this point, the name Sophia Rodriguez has become synonymous with 'World record-breaker.'

The Dallastown (PA) area eighth-grade grad who has risen to national stardom this season ran her way to a new world 14-year-old World age group 2-mile record on Saturday evening at Nike Outdoor Nationals, clocking a time of 10:12.33 for sixth overall in the girls championship section.

That mark smashed her own previous World best, which came at the indoor edition of Nike Nationals in March where she ran 10:20.68.

Rodriguez took it out hot with the rest of the leaders -- some of whom were four years her senior -- as she hit the 1-mile mark at 5:01.83.

But she held strong for the remaining four laps to destroy her previous record by over eight seconds.

Rodriguez now has two World age group 14-year-old records to her name, including an astonishing 5,000m all-time mark of 16:22.30 set just two weeks ago at the John Hay Pennsylvania Distance Festival.

Her 2-mile effort also came just three days after toeing the line in the middle school mile at Brooks PR Invitational, where Rodriguez finished fourth in a new personal best of 4:50.20.

All around, it's been a sensational year of competition for the middle schooler, who first took the country by storm after a 15-second clip of her running a 4:56 indoor 1,600m back in February amassed well over 1.5 million view on the MileSplit Instagram page.

What's up next for Rodriguez?

A trip to Bermuda with her sister, Victoria Rodriguez, for the Bermuda Track Challenge set for June 23-24, and she's slated to contest the 800m and 1,500m.
