Mora Hunts For First 5A State Title

Texas 5k leader David Mora has never won a state cross country title.

2022 could be the year that the Lubbock Monterey senior finally gets his shining moment.

Mora enters the 5A boys field as the favorite for an individual state title after back-to-back third-place finishes as a sophomore and junior.

A 14:46.17 5k performance at the Southlake Carroll XC Invite began Mora's season with a bang, and the time has held throughout the course of the season as the fastest boys 5k mark in the state of Texas. That puts him among 11 boys in the state that have dipped under 15 minutes for the 5k this season.

However, two of those sub-15-minute racers will also vie for the boys 5A crown. Wyatt Athey of Denton and Grapevine's Adam Burlison have gone 14:56.29 and 14:57.98 this season, respectively, and will toe the line as two of the top racers in the field.

Burlison in particular enters with perhaps the most momentum in the field, having just beat Mora at the Region 1 Championships and proving he has the makings of a legitimate title contender.

Similar to the girls race, the team battle could turn into the Lucas Lovejoy show.

A sweep of both the boys and girls titles would make for quite the celebration for the 5A powerhouse.
