2021-22 Notable Finishes: Ninth at RunningLane Cross Country Championships in a 5k personal best of 14:23.32; fifth at the Eastbay Cross Country Championships in 15:22.30. Also ran 4:04.32 for the 1,600m and 8:59.05 in the 3,200m to win titles at the Indiana state meet during the outdoor season.
Analysis: Mathison enters the 2022 season coming off a pivotal junior season that saw him excel at not one, but two of the biggest cross country meets of the season, just days apart.
His two best performances of the 2021 season came within a week of each other as he ran a 14:23.32 5k personal best performance for ninth at RunningLane and later finished fifth at Eastbay just seven days later. Back-to-back top-10 finishes at high profile meets certainly made him one to contend with on the national scene.
Mathison went on to follow up cross country with bests of 4:04.82 for 1,600m and 8:59.05 for 3,200m during outdoor track, both of which earned him Indiana state titles.
That's also not to mention the potential Mathison has to help lead Carmel to success as a team nationally as they enter 2022 as a top team to watch on the national scene. With a star like Mathison leading the helm, Carmel could shoot for team national greatness.
Mathison could likely be a top contender yet again this year as both an individual and for his team, which boosts him toward the top of the preseason rankings.
