Also ran a US No. 10 time of 8:54.97 for the two mile during outdoor.

Analysis: 2021's freshman phenom returns to the course this year looking to improve on his stellar introduction to high school competition.

Smith, now a sophomore at Knoxville Catholic (TN), made a name for himself on the national stage last year when he became the fastest ninth grader to ever do it at 5k in cross country. He earned that designation with his 14:53.79 time from The Southern Showcase to finish second at the premiere event. Smith also qualified for the Eastbay Cross Country Championships last fall by placing seventh at the South regional, so even as an underclassmen, he holds extensive championship racing experience.

The same narrative carried over to the track season where Smith continued his hot streak of racing in championship meets. During indoor, Smith won both the freshman 800m and freshman one mile at New Balance Nationals, and come outdoor, he clocked 8:54.97 in the two mile for sixth at Brooks PR.

Smith shows great promise to develop into one of the best distance talents for the next coming years, and 2022 could make for even more improvement for the underclassman. Now as a sophomore, maybe we could see Smith chase after the sophomore class record of 14:33.94, which is held by Union Catholic's Jimmy Wischusen up in New Jersey, and garner more top finishes at high-profile meets.
