HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA -- The stage was set on Saturday for an epic showdown between three rising stars in the world of high school distance running.

Between Belmont School's James Donahue, Newbury Park's Lex Young and Christ School's Rocky Hansen, the high school championship mile at the RunningLane Track Championships was oozing with sub-4 potential.

It did not disappoint.

From blistering first lap in 58.89 seconds to a fast half-mile split of 1:58.98, Donahue pledged his fortunes on going for the (seemingly) impossible.

But Hansen and Young weren't far behind.

The pair stuck on Donahue as the pace went through the 1,209 split at 2:59, and then the race got interesting. As Donahue came back in the final 200m, Hansen and Young began their ascents toward the finish, gobbling up track as they looked to break four minutes.

Hansen came up just short, though won in a snazzy-new PR of 4:00.76, hitting for a new U.S. No. 3 time. Young was second in 4:01.52, good for a U.S. No. 5 mark, while Donahue was third in 4:02.98. It was his third 4:02 of the 2022 calendar year.

Walker St. John was fourth in 4:07.44 while Bryce Reeburgh was fifth in 4:10.33.
