It was Will Sumner time this weekend in Georgia.
The Woodstock (GA) High School senior, one of the country's all-timers in the 800m and a national indoor record-holder in the 500m and 600m, went #beastmode on Saturday at the GHSA Class 7A Outdoor Track and Field Championships, clocking a new U.S. No. 1 time of 45.78 seconds in the 400m.
It was a new state record, surpassing the former state mark of 46.14 held formerly by Justin Long in 2018. However, Georgia's best all-time 400m mark also went down, with Sumner passing Elija Godwin's career-best high school time of 45.83, which he had set back in 2016 at the AAU National Club Championships.
Sumner, as seen by the photos, was appropriately shocked.
That wasn't all, though. The Georgia recruit also contributed to his team's fourth-place finish in the 4x400 and he anchored the squad's win in the 4x800 on Thursday, a time of 7:47.53 that now stands as fourth-best in state history.
Next up for Sumner will be this weekend's Wingfoot Meet of Champions in Atlanta, then dates with the Music City Carnival in Nashville, Brooks PR, Nike Outdoor Nationals and a chance to qualify for the World U20 Championships.
