Texas Region 2-6A Boys 1600m Battle For State Meet Berth
- - -
A trip to the state meet was on the line Saturday at the Region 2 - Class 6A Championships and tensions were running high in the 1,600m. With only two guaranteed entries making the state meet, a top-two finish was crucial.
The race started out bunched up with most of the field within 10 meters of each other. The field was running in a very tight pack.
Five hundred meters into the race, Wylie High's (TX) Luke Lambert went down, causing a handful of other guys to go down as well.
The race continued on.
Lambert and the others who went down got back up and were trailing off the pack. As the race progressed, Lambert could be seen slowly working his way back up through the crowd.
With a lap to go, you could feel the urgency as a group of six athletes opened up a gap on the field. At 200m, the group started to pick it up again with three guys all battling for the lead.
Down the home stretch, it was The Woodlands College Park's Chase Nutt in lane one and The Woodlands Chance Gibson on his outside in lane two, and holding strong just behind Nutt was Lambert on the inside.
With 50 meters to go, Lambert made a big push on the inside, while on the outside of Nutt and Gibson, Klein's Christopher Daniels was making another big move.
With a big final push, Lambert landed a huge come-from-behind win, while Daniels after making up ground in the final 200 meters would place second.
