The 1A girls race this past weekend at the 2020 NCHSAA State Championships came down to a battle between the top two athletes. The entire Section 2 race for the girls 1A state title was between three girls from the gun. Riverside's (NC) Briley BickerstaffHighland Tech's (NC) Lauren Tolbertand Alleghany's (NC) Hazel Pasley were all in the mix.

The three were bunched up battling for the lead from the gun, but in the last 800 meters, the race really started to playout. Bickerstaff took the lead in the group of three but Tolbert wasn't ready to give in. The course took a quick right and then a left and as the trio made their way through that section Tolbert threw in a surge to pass  Bickerstaff.

After that final left, Tolbert found herself staring right down the home stretch with approximately 150m left between her and the clock. The junior kept her foot on the gas and was able to take home the win in 19:15.05. Bickerstaff would finish just a second back in 19:16.96 while Pasley took home third in 19:27.04. The trio were the overall top three fastest times of the day for class 1A.
