Masciarelli, Rauber, and Puffer Compete In Pro 5K

Many states in the Northeast have not gone back to high school competitions yet this season. But that hasn't stopped seniors Sydney Masciarelli and Brooke Rauber from chasing after their goals anyway, and both ladies competed Friday night at the Night of the 5K - Presented by Trials of Miles x Bakline.

With the help of a pacer, eventual winner Allie Kieffer started the race at a fast pace. Once the pacer dropped off at 2K, Kieffer was left to finish the race alone. Rauber and Masciarelli hung back in the chase pack and led that group for the majority of the race. They separated to form a group of their own and came through with three laps to go in 12:37. Kieffer would win the race in a PR of 15:41.41 with Lindsay Crevoiserat running 16:17.00 for second place.

Down the home stretch, it was Rauber who just edged out Masicarelli 16:28.34 to 16:30.06, earning the duo third- and fourth-place overall, respectively. The two ran practically side-by-side the entire evening.

Rauber improved on her time from two weeks ago when she ran 16:32.62, which made her the fourth-fastest outdoor 5K runner in New York state history. She now moves up the rankings to the third-fastest outdoor 5K runner.

Heat B of the men's 5K also saw one of the nation's top high school boys compete. Manchester (CT) High School's Aidan Puffer ran a new all-around 5K PR of 14:25.82. He's run 14:30 on the roads earlier this year at the Step One Day race. He was second in his heat only behind 2020 Loomis Chaffee (CT) graduate now Princeton freshmen Matthew Farrell who ran 14:19.83.

Desert Twilight Did Not Disappoint

The biggest meet of the weekend was hands down the Desert Twilight Invitational. On Friday night, many of the nation's top athletes took to the new The LINKS at Queen Creek course to see just how fast they could go. Let's just say the outcome was wild.

With neither of the major high school national championships taking place this season, this race may be remembered as being one of the most competitive of the season.

How about this fun fact? The Newbury Park boys averaged 15:04.98 for their scoring five, which reportedly is the second-fastest team 5K performance of all-time, just behind South Eugene's 15:01.02 from the Oregon State Meet in 1978.
