WATCH Sophie Atkinson Run 10:11 In 3200m Time Trial

Sophie Atkinson had a heck of a sophomore season as she qualified for the 2019 UIL 6A state track and field met in three individual events. The Katy Cinco Ranch distance runner competed in Austin in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m events last season; she dropped PRs of 2:13.60, 4:53.42, and 10:30.96.

This season, it was unclear as to whether Atkinson would challenge the gauntlet again, but she did compete in the 800m and 1600m this year before COVID-19 abruptly ended the season. Although it was early, that didn't stop her from producing fast times. In the 800m, she ran 2:16.92 at the Will Taylor Relays on February 15th and then a couple of days before the season ended Atkinson ran a 1600m PR of 4:48.95 on March 12th at the Alamo City Mile And Steeple.

Before closing the books on the 2020 track season, Atkinson decided to add a 3200m PR to the one she ran in the 1600m. On her home track, with some pacers, her effort produced the PR she was looking for -- and it was BIG!

Unofficially, Atkinson ran a 10:11 in the time trial. To put it in perspective, that time would rank No. 3 All-Time in Texas, if it were official. London Culbreath set the UIL state meet record in 2017 when she ran 10:13.68 and last season Brynn Brown broke the UIL state meet record when she ran 10:09.91. Brown followed that up with a 9:58.58 this season at the Coppell Relays.
