4/22-Quotes from Leach, Radocaj and Regan after record days @ Penn

Quotes from Nicole Leach, Ruby Radocaj and Lindsay Regan, who each set a meet record on the first day of the 110th running of the Penn Relays Carnival.

Nicole Leach, West Catholic Meet record 57.84 400 Hurdles

Did you see this time coming?

No. I wasn't in the race until the straightaway. I had no idea. Actually, I was out of the race at the beginning. I was just telling myself to just stay with it and get back in the race. And that's what I did, finished strong.

What about being able to see someone pulling away from you?

Actually, that's a good thing. I can see who's going over first and I can see where I am in a race, and whether I have to take it up a notch. I wasn't worried too much, because I knew I could come back in the end.

Where did you take over?

I guess about 250, coming off the middle of the turn, I looked an I saw that I got it. And coming off the 9th hurdle, I just opened up and ran to the finish line.

Did you 52.19 indoor and 53-point last week tell you you were going to bust through 59?

Oh yeah, that 52 indoor gave me confidence.

West Catholic Coach Lenny Jordan

After the 52.19 indoors, did you see this coming?

We knew it was there. If she runs the right kind of race and doesn't stutter-step, it's there.

So just skipping right over 58?

Yep, because the first part of her race is usually bad, because she is usually cautious. But today she was aggressive, and once she got past those first three, that was it. The last five hurdles are her race. If you don't get away from her before the last five, she can run with anybody. If she is within five yards, she's that strong, and she has sprinter speed.

So her race was perfect today?

It was perfect. The only thing she can do differently is run faster.

What's the plan for the rest of the year?

I want her to run 300 hurdles. That'll help out the first part of her race. Now we'll experiment and work on the first five hurdles. And I think once she establishes that, I think she can go under 57.

Ruby Radocah, Williamsport Meet record 154-03 Javelin Committed to Minnesota

Was that your biggest win in your career?

Yeah, definitely, This and states. I threw pretty consistent today. My technique was good, it was what I like it to be. That's just a couple of feet off my PR, so for this point in the season, that't pretty good.

How long have you been throwing?

I played softball my whole lift, and I decided to start something new. My brother was throwing Javelin, so I picked it up one day and I threw it pretty far, so I stuck with it.

Lindsay Regan, Easton Meet record 12-07.50 Pole Vault (used new carbon 145 and switched to a Pacer 145)

Were you pleased with today's effort?

Today felt good to me, although it was a little hot. I'm not used to this weather. My run was mostly on, and my jump was getting there. It's all coming together now.

Where's the area for improvement?

My top end. I have difficulty piking over the bar, coming off the pole.

Are you getting used to the pressure of these big meets?

I really don't from these meets because I've been competing as an athlete since I was three years old. So I'm sort of used to it now with all these people watching, and it sort of gives you a little more strength. The crowd gives you more drive to want to succeed.

You're consistently over 12' now. So is 13' that far away?

Hopefully, it's not that far away. I would really enjoy getting 13'. That's my goal for the meets I have left to go to.

Your older sister, who just started vaulting at Cornell as a sophomore (clearing 11-9 indoor and outdoor), has been doing well.

Surprisingly. No, just kidding. Her work ethic is above and beyond everyone else's. She tries so hard at everything she does, I knew that she would succeed before she even started.

Has it been a help having your sister, Courtney, to share competition with?

It definitely does. She's there. She supports me. She is someone to talk to when I have troubles. She just keeps me from breaking down.

So she's had a lot to do with your success?

She definitely has.
