
After a lengthy break from competition since last racing at New Balance Nationals Indoor in March, Kelsey Chmiel is ready to hit the track again.
That time off left ample room for training, building, and working toward a larger plan, which includes potential goals in the 1500m and 3000m, where the Saratoga Springs (NY) High junior has shined in recent years.
A year ago, Chmiel claimed a sophomore class record in the 3K at the Eddy Games in May, racing to a time of 9:18.09, which put her seventh all-time and third over the last four-year period.
But there are still some records that Chmiel could go after Friday at the New York Relays.
The first, perhaps, is the all-time best effort in April, which was achieved by Haley Pierce of Tatnall (DE) in 2011 at The Penn Relays. Pierce clocked a time of 9:16.36.
There's also Kate Murphy's junior class record of 9:10.51, which the Lake Braddock (VA) High graduate posted in 2016 at the USATF Junior National Outdoor Championships.
