It's going to be a ridiculously competitive year in the boys and girls 1600m in 2018. 

Fourteen boys return having run faster than 4:11, including leading returner Gabe Fendel, a senior from Hamilton Southeastern (IN) High who's signed with the University of Colorado. Oh, but there's more. The No. 2 returner is New Balance Nationals Indoor 1-mile champion Dustin Horter, an Indiana recruit and senior for Lakota East (OH) High. And then there's the third-fastest returnee, Foot Locker Champion Dylan Jacobs, a senior from Sandburg and a future Notre Dame runner. 

In the girls field, 20 athletes have run faster than 4:51, including leader Olivia Howell, a junior from Solon (OH). Behind her, however, it gets extremely fast. Ann Arbor Pioneer (MI) senior Anne Forsyth, a Michigan recruit, has the No. 2 fastest returning time of 4:43.83, while senior Maddy Denner of Oak Ridge High (CA) comes in at No. 3.
