Perhaps the surprise winner of New Balance was another athlete from Brentwood.
Keep in mind, though, Jeff Charvet, was from Heritage High, a California high school.
Coming off a huge win in the 800m during the California outdoor season in 1:51.07, Charvet once again dropped a personal best, surging to the line in 1:50.91, which is a new US No. 2 time.
Maybe it wasn't so surprising, considering California is one of the nation's best track states and a state title in any event is enough cred to warrant a resume. But Charvet only competed in two previous indoor races at 800m before New Balance, and his best came in February with a 1:54.10.
Despite that, he out kicked solid efforts from Green Hope (NC) High's Ian Delgado (1:51.06) and Passaic (NJ) High's Luis Peralta (1:51.74).
