Flower Mound (TX) High sophomore Kirk Jarrett is a perfect example of what can happen with dedication to the sport of cross country.
Jarrett, who ran JV last year, earned a 5K PB of 17:01.03 in 2016.
One year later?
He's now the Class 6A state champion in Texas, having lowered his PB down to an incredible 15:02.60 at the University Interscholastic League Championships, the last regular season meet of the year in Round Rock. As a note, Lehi (UT) High's Ryan Raff is seventh on this list and also a state champion in Utah, but he ran the 5K distance just once in 2016 and generally concentrated on the 3-mile distance, where he's been consistently dominant for the past two seasons.
On the list below, he has the ninth-best improvement in the distance year-over-year. Check out nearly 1,000 senior boys and their improvement from 2016 to now.
