Weekend Rundown: State Meet Action Kicks Into Full Swing

As expected, the Indiana High School Athletic Association championships played hosted to spectacular finishes in both the boys and girls fields on Saturday on the LaVern Gibson Championship course in Terra Haute.

Hamilton Southeastern senior Gabe Fendel, ranked No. 4 in the Flo50 national boys rankings, won his first state title in 15:17.20, while Greencastle junior Emma Wilson earned her first title by beating defending champion and third-place finisher Tyler Schwartz. Carmel's Phoebe Bates finished second.

But perhaps the most thrilling competition of the day came in the girls team championship race, where Zionsville Community High pulled off the win with 118 points, defeating Fort Wayne Carroll (129), Carmel (169), and Brebeuf Jesuit (169).

Zionsville's top two, senior Sophia Rigg and sophomore Katelyn Wasson, were especially important. By finishing in seventh and 10th overall, the girls made up placement for their fourth and fifth, which followed in 60th and 73rd. The squad put together an 18:46 average and 55-second spread.

Fort Wayne Carroll, meanwhile, ran perfectly together, compiling a 27-second spread between its scoring five and netted an 18:52 average, but it only put one runner in the top 25 and its star freshman, Zoe Duffus, ran through injury -- she commented later that she wanted to race for her team -- finishing 51st overall.
