Does 800m speed translate to the 5K?
Check out the comparison between the top returning 800m runners in 2017 and their 5K times from 2016. Bishop Shanahan (Pa.) High's Josh Hoey, for example, is the top returning 800m runner but he has some ground to make up in the 5K (he's the 132nd ranked runner with combined performances).
On the other hand, Hamilton Southeastern (IN) High's Gabe Fendel has the second fastest 5K time from 2016, but he's the 103rd ranked 800m runner with a combined performance from the 2017 season.
Ultimately, 800m times make a huge difference for closers in the 5K -- and almost everyone on the top returning 800m runners list could be considered a 'closer.'
