It seems fitting this race finished 1-2 with a pair of future University of Arkansas teammates.
But it was Sam Schillinger, a senior at Cedar Falls (IA) High, who turned it up over the last laps to take the win in a US No. 40 time of 9:06.04. Trailing a few seconds behind was second-place finisher Ryan Murphy of Marion Linn-Mar (IA) High, who crossed in 9:11.40.
With the performance, Schillinger could position himself for his first state title after a third-place performance in 2016. Murphy, who was fourth in that same race, could offer his stiffest competition.
Future Iowa State University runner Patrick Bose was third in 9:16.93.
