2. Yukon (OK) High's Vernon Turner is just two inches away from the all-time best high school boys high jump record after his epic 7-5 height this weekend
The high jumper from Yukon (OK) High went a state record 7-feet-5 at the Claremore Zebra Invitational, setting a new national US #1 and inching closer to the top spot in the all-time record books. His effort is now tied for eighth all-time on the high school outdoor list -- only seven athletes have gone that height or higher all-time.
His mark came just two weeks after he opened his season with a mark of 7-feet at the Edmond Santa Fe Wolves Invitational.
Turner hasn't attended a national meet in four years since he began jumping, so his name won't be familiar for many, but by virtue of his latest accomplishment, don't be surprised if -- or when -- he secures potentially the best leap ever.
For the record, that all-time outdoor mark of 7-7 is held currently by Brenham (Tx.) High's Andra Manson, who accomplished the feat in 2002.
