Apple unveiled 12 new emoji designs for the iOS 10 update this fall, including one that is sure to make female cross country and track and field athletes do a lot more texting.
Yes, the runner girl emoji is finally here!
She joins a more diverse cast of new emoji that includes a female surfboarder, swimmer, weight lifter, basketball player, cyclist, detective and construction worker. There are also single mom and single dad emojis, a water gun and a rainbow pride flag.
Two-time Olympian Molly Huddle, who will represent the United States in the 10K in Rio this month, campaigned for the creation of a female runner emoji. She submitted a design with friends Róisín McGettigan-Dumas and Myles Dumas to the Unicode Consortium last fall, but didn't wait around for Apple to share it with the world.
