Twelve Races To Watch At The New York State Meet

The nation's No. 3 ranked 3200m runner in Noah Affolder is the favorite for titles in the 3200m and 3K steeplechase.

Boys Races

Boys 400m Hurdles

Who: Infinite Tucker
When: Friday, 3:50 p.m. ET [Class Final]; Saturday, 2:00 p.m. ET [Federation Final]
Why: The future UMass wide receiver is ranked No. 2 in the nation with his personal best of 51.23 over the 400m hurdles. He's the clear standout in this field and will chase the state meet record of 51.86.

Boys 1600m

Who: Conor Lundy
When: Saturday, 11:25 a.m. ET [Federation Final]
Why: All-American Lundy set his personal best of 4:07.5 en route to winning the state meet last year. He's run under 4:10 twice in the full mile and looks poised to be the first repeat champion since 2010.

Boys 3200m

Who: Noah Affolder, Ryan Kutch, Ben Petrella
When: Friday, 5:40 p.m. ET [Federation Final]
Why: Affolder established himself as the best in New York and one of the best in the nation in winning the Loucks Games in 8:47.60, which still ranks No. 3 in the country. But this race won't be a cakewalk as the Carthage High School junior must contend against fellow sub-nine performers in Kutch (US #18, 8:52.95) and Petrella (8:59.79).

Boys 3K Steeplechase

Who: Eoin Nohilly, Noah Affolder
When: Saturday, 10:00 a.m. ET [Federation Final]
Why: Affolder returns to the track the morning after his 3200m final for a shot at the double. The junior from Carthage has swept the three steeple races he's entered this spring and added a personal best of 9:16.5, but he'll face the experience of Nohilly, who was third in this event last year, runner-up at New Balance Nationals Outdoor and owns a PR of 6:03.48.

Boys 4x800m Relay

Who: Hauppauge, Warwick Valley, West Islip
When: Friday, 2:20 p.m. ET
Why: Three teams seeded under 7:50 make this event a race to watch. West Islip and Warwick Valley have run 7:47.39 and 7:48.14, respectively, though West Islip should be given the slight advantage as they took down Warwick at the Loucks Games and made the Championship of America final at Penn Relays. Latecomer Hauppauge set the state leader in qualifying at 7:47.31.
