Day 2 PM Session Recap: Candace Hill 11.09 100m Meet Record Highlights Four Medals for Team USA

Candace Hill, the High School National Record holder for 100m, wins gold in a meet record time of 11.08.

Candace Hill (GA) was able to continue her undefeated streak in the 100m, capturing gold in a championship meet record time of 11.08.

“I’m a real world champion,” she said at the IAAF press conference. “It’s so amazing. This means the world to me. Winning a gold medal for Team USA; I’m just so, so thankful."

Khalifa St. Fort (FL) finished second for Trinidad and Tobago in 11.19 and Jayla Kirkland (AL) was third for Team USA in 11.41. Although St. Fort is representing Trinidad and Tobago at the World Youth Championships, she goes to St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Florida.

After two days of competition, George Patrick (TN) finished fourth in the decathlon with a point total of 7493. With two events to go in the afternoon session, Patrick had 6425 points. In the first event of the afternoon session, Patrick had a javelin throw of 139-10.75ft (480pts). In the final event, the 1500m, Patrick ran a PR of 4:55.20 for 588 points.

In the women's pole vault, both Carson Dingler (GA) and Rachel Baxter (CA) advanced to the finals clearing 3.90m ( 12-9.5) and 3.80m ( 12-5.5) respectively. This despite the fact that they had to vault on unfamiliar, borrowed poles, as their own poles were stuck in customs.

All the U.S. 400m runners advanced to the next round. On the guys side, Josephus Lyles (VA) took second in his heat (45.93) while Keshun Reed (TX) won his heat running 46.77. On the girls side, Lynna Irby (IN) ran a US #4 PR of 52.77 to automatically qualify for the finals. Although she was not able to grab an auto-qualifying spot, Symone Mason (FL) ran 53.48 to advance on time.

In the throws, Sophia Rivera (MO) was bouncing between the shot put finals and the javelin final. This was the first time in IAAF history that an athlete competed in two field event finals at the same time. She was able to place second in the shot put with a final throw of 17.93m (58-10ft). In the Javelin, she placed eighth with her third throw, which was 50.85m (166-10ft). She took a fourth throw and passed on her final two throws.

In the men's 400m hurdle semis, Norman Grimes (TX) was able to successfully advance to the finals after winning his heat in 51.41.

In the final event of the night, Brittley Humphrey (AL) ran a time of 13.22 to place second in the 100m hurdles. This was a huge upset over Alexis Duncan (TX), who set the World No. 2 All-Time and U.S. Youth Record in the semi-finals with her 12.95 clocking.
