Treece and Crofford, Vess & Smith break meet records in the 5000 on Day One

On a cool, crisp, breezeless night perfect for distance racing, two girls and two boys broke the one-year old meet records in the 5000. Michigan's Marissa Treece opened an early lead and kept Pennsylvania's Lara Croffrord about 30 meters back the entire way, pushing across the line in 16:36.34. The meet record of 16:57.21 was held by Bona Jones of Florida. Connecticut's Adam Vess and New Jersey's Doug Smith battlled over the last mile, with Smith taking a lead on the pentultimate lap, before the sophomore was overpowered by his senior racing companion on the final lap. Vess finished in 14:38.23, with Smith in at 14:40.76. The meet record of 14:48.43 was set in 2006 by Ben Massum of New Jersey.
