Men's Decathlon (High Jump, 400m)
Harrison Williams (TN)
Gabe Moore (FL)
Memphis University School recent graduate Harrison Williams (TN) got off to a strong start in the 100 meter dash this morning (10.75) to start off the decathlon, but had to work himself back into the top 10 overall standings at the end of day one with a 48.21 performance in the 400. In the field events making up the middle portion of his busy day, Williams leaped 6.80m in the long jump, threw 13.53m in the shot put, and cleared 1.94m in the high jump.
Trailing US teammate Harrison Williams by 22 points and two places was Gabriele Moore from Florida after the first day of the men's decathlon. The 2014 New Balance Nationals champion posted a time of 10.98 in the same heat of the 100 meter dash as Williams as well as went 49.01 in the 400 to end the day in the same race with Williams. In between the two events, Moore competed in three events between the long jump (7.01m), shot put (13.41m), and high jump (1.97m).
Women's Heptathlon (Shot Put, 200m)
Ashlee Moore (AZ)
Shaina Burns (MN)
One of Arizona's most versatile high school athletes ever in Ashlee Moore will be ranked 11th going into day two events of the women's heptathlon with total score of 3,331 points for her first 4 events with a 13.59 PR in the 100 hurdles, 1.73m clearance in the high jump, 9.87 mark in the shot put, and 25.05 clocking in the 200 meter dash. The incoming University of Oregon recruit is hoping to move back up in the top 10 on day two.
New Balance Nationals indoor and outdoor Shaina Burns on the other hand was disqualified in the 200 meter dash, which dropped her down near the bottom of the standings after tallying 2,520 points following a 14.58 clocking in the 100 meter hurdles, 1.70m clearance in the high jump, and 13.59 mark in the shot put. She was just starting move in the overall standings after having the 7th best mark in the shot.
Haley Showalter (CO)
Brooke Anderson (AZ)
Valor Christian School rising senior Haley Showalter of Colorado had one of the more gutwrenching moments for Team USA on day one as the US Junior Nationals champ fouled all three of her attempts in the qualifying round. Just completing her junior year of high school, Showalter will more big international opportunties to have a much better showing than today.
The other American in the hammer competition was Northern Arizona University freshmen Brooke Andersen, who was able to get a legal mark in of 54.64m which placed her 21st overall.
Tyler Brown (MI)
Lamar Bruton (DE)
Running from the outside lane, former Delaware high school quarter mile state champ Lamar Bruton-Grinnage was able to get out well and hold on enough to grab one of the top two automatic qualifiers in his prelim heat of the men's 400 meter dash with a 46.74 performance from the Ohio State University.
Current Eastern Michigan University freshmen and former Ohio high school state champion Tyler Brown got off to a slow start out of the blocks, got himself in the leaders position into the final turn by moving up mid-race, and then had to hold off a late challenge from Great Britain's Jack Crosby before winning his heat in 46.45 to move onto the final. Brown is the second fastest entrant in the field coming into this week at World Juniors.
Kaylin Whitney (FL)
Ariana Washington (CA)
Ariana Washington, who won numerous California state titles over her high school career at Long Beach Poly, took first in her 100 meter dash prelim heat with ease in a 11.67 clocking for the future University of Oregon Duck. Already in Eugene training with the team this past month, Washington is aiming for a top 3 podium finish in the finals in the front of her new home base.
New York state champ and New Balance Nationals runner-up in the 100 meter dash, Brenessa Thompson of Medger Evers College Prep (NY) looked to have made it onto the next round of the 100 with her 11.71 performance in her prelim heat competing for her birth country of Guyana.
Kaylin Whitney did not have the greatest start, but still stayed under control and did what she needed to do to win her first round race in a 11.49 clocking. Great Britain's Dina Asher-Smith wll certainly be worthy competition for the US high school national record holder after a 11.18 prelim performance for Asher-Smith.
Jazmin McCoy (MO)
Quanesha Burks (AL)
University of Alabama freshmen Quanesha Burks qualified for the finals of the women's long jump with a mark of 6.12m in her preliminary flight (9th best overall going into finals).
