Stephanie Jenks 9:26 3K, Albert Meier 8:58 3200 opens up Drake Relays

The high school events got underway on Thursday at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa and the two performances which stood out the most were two meet record breaking performances by Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar High School (IA) in the 3K and Albert Meier of Boone High School in the 3200 meter run.

Linn-Mar sophomoe Jenks was coming off two wins last week at the Kansas Relays including earning an automatic spot in the adidas Dream Mile. She continued her strong spring of races this weekend at the Drake Relays, but simply dominating the girls 3K field winning by 34 seconds over Rebekah Topham of Griswold in a new Drake Relays meet record time of 9:26.87, which is the third fastest time in the country this season behind only the Arcadia Invite 3200 en route times by Alexa Efraimson (9:23.24) and Anna Maxwell (9:26.23). Jenks time also establishes a new Iowa state 3K record with her race at the Drake Relays.

The 3200 race at the Drake Relays for Albert Meier is the definition of a breakthrough run. With a previous 3200 PR of 9:18 and finishing second in the Iowa state cross country meet this past fall, Meier was able to take a huge chunk of time off his 3200 PR as well as defeat one of his state's best runners in Josh Evans of Linn-Mar in the proccess. It ended up being a three runner race at the end between Meier, Evans (2nd, 9:01.55), and Gilbert junior Thomas Pollard (3rd, 9:04.85) as all three ended up running under the meet record time, while Meier closed the strongest over the final lap to run his first sub 9 minute race in impressive fashion in a final time of 8:58.46 for the win.

A third meet record of the day nearly went down in the boys long jump as Clear Lake junior Chandler Diercks was less than two inches off the all-time high school best at the Drake Relays with a leap of 23'10".
