The Great Southwest Invitational at altitude-friendly Albuquerque (N.M.), as usual, featured the speed events that were often aided by over the allowable wind for record purposes but that fact did not take away from some outstanding performances. Ariana Washington of Long Beach Poly (Ca.) was a double winner taking the 100 in 11.18 and the 200 in 200 in 23.05. Both times were wind aided but they were the fastest prep times in the nation under all conditions. In a little bit of a surprise Hannah Cunliffe of Federal Way (Wa.) was third in the 100 at 11.38 and second in the 200 at 23.10. Both times were personal bests. Freshman Kaylin Whitney of East Ridge (Clermont, Fl.) was fourth at 11.47 and 23.28 but you will have to wait until 2015 to see her in the World Youth championships as she is too young for the 2013 edition. Ashley Miller of Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Co.) was the top 100 high hurdler with a wind-aided 13.75 but, like Whitney, she also will have to wait until 2015 to compete. Jasmyne Graham of Roosevelt (Corona, Ca) and Kymber Payne of Long Beach Poly were second and third at 13.77 and 13.82, respectively. Payne came back to take the 300 hurdles in 42.08. Chyna Ries of Washington (Denver, Co.) won the long jump at 19-9¾ into a 1.9 meter per second wind. Alexa Harmon-Thomas of Lawrence (Ks.) won the heptathlon with an excellent 5,158.

Paul Lucas of Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Az.), the top Youth sprinter in the nation, was second in the boys 100 at 10.43 and the 200 at 21.08. Both races were aided by winds over 3.4 mps. Keandre Bates of Burges (El Paso, Tx.) became the second Youth jumper to jump over 50 feet with legal wind with his winning jump of 50-2 ½. Connor Turnage of Highlands Ranch (Co.) was second at 49-0¾. Noah Gilfillan of Corsicana (Tx.) was third in the pole vault with a personal best of 16-5¼ to move into the upper tire of Youth vaulters. Reno Tuufuli of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.) had a personal best of 185-7 in winning the discus.

The New Jersey Meet of Champions at South Plainfield produced a number of fine marks. Torie Robinson of Winslow (Atco) became the first high school athlete in the nation to dip under 60 seconds with her 59.56 in the 400 hurdles. Thaila Cooper of Kingsway (Woolwich) won a separate section at 62.02. Taylor McLaughlin of Union Catholic (Scotch Plains) was second in the boys 400 hurdles at 52.48 for the second fastest Youth time in the nation. Olivia Baker of Columbia (Maplewood) put in an outstanding nights work winning the 100 in 12.05, the 200 in 23.95, the 400 in 53.84 and anchoring 48.11 and 3:46.48 relays. Wow! Kyle Levermore of Don Bosco Tech (Ramsey) won the 3,200 in 8:55.41. Elizabeth Lansing of Randolph was second in the 1,600 at 4:45.36 and Mackenzie Barry of West Morris-Mendham (Mendham) was second in the 3,200 at 10:23.15. Christopher Mirabelli of Holy Cross (Delran) won the javelin with a personal best of 214-6.

In Division III of the Ohio state meet in Columbus, Chad Zallow of Kennedy (Warren) won the 300 hurdles in 36.87 for the second fastest Youth time in the nation. John Lint (Columbus Academy, Gahanna) was second at 37.17. Zallow also won the 110 hurdles 14.35 and has a best of 14.20. In Division I Shaun Crawford of St. Edward (Lakewood) was third in the 100 and fifth in the 200 after running personal legal best of 10.54 and 21.47 in the heats. Michael Hall of St. Xavier (Cincinnati) was second in the 1,600 in 4:09.45 and Nick Elswick of Chardon was second in the 3,200 at 9:00.43. In the girls competition, sophomore Karrington Withers of New Albany won the Division I 400 in 53.59 for the fastest Youth time in the nation. Oksana Lawrence of Meadowbrook (Dayton) won the Division II race in 54.04.

The Portland Distance Festival provided yet another stage for Mary Cain to display her wide range of talents—this time in the 5,000. She was content to run in the middle of the pack and proceed in a very evenly paced race passing 3,000 at 9:28.0 on her way to finishing sixth in 15:45.86 to break the high school record of 15:48.91 set by Emily Sisson of Parkway Central (Chesterfield, Mo.) in 2010. She closed with a 67 last lap. That time also broke the American Youth record of 16:14.69 set by Erin Keogh of Langley (McLean, Va.) in 1986. Elise Cranny of Niwot (Co.) was fourth in the 1,500 at 4:15.86 and Alexa Efraimson of Camas (Wa.) was fifth in a personal best of 4:16.00. Drew Schreiber of Eisenhower (Yakima, Wa.) was second in race three of the 800 running a personal best of 1:51.84.  At the Midwest Distance Carnival in Lisle (Il.), Josh Evans Linn-Mar (Marion, Ia.) was third in the mile at 4:10.79 and Addison DeHaven of Brookings (S.D.) won the two-mile at 9:01.13.

At the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Caitland Smith of Pelham (Al.) won the 100 in 11.78 and Chantel Ray of Hampton (Va.) won the 100 hurdles at 13.74 with Queenee Dale of Romulus (Mi.) second at 13.84. Darrielle McQueen of  won the triple jump at 40-9½ and Lloydricia Cameron of Northwestern (Miami, Fl.) was a double winner taking the shot put at 43-11 ¼ and the discus at 151-9. Sophomore Katie Hall of Lake Region (Bridgton, Me.) won 100 at the New England championships in 11.69.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
