         Look whose back in town.

After suffering a serious injury at the New Balance national indoor meet at the Armory in New York City, Dior Hall of Washington (Denver, Co.) has made a dramatic return to action. With just two races before the state meet, Hall wasted no time in re-established herself as a favorite to win the World Youth championship 100 hurdles this summer. Two years she burst on to the scene with a stunning 13.18 at the Great Southwest Invitational taking advantage of the altitude and a generous aiding legal win. Last year she had best of 13.45 in finishing second at the U.S. Junior championships. In just her fourth race of the year she won the State 5A title with a 13.67. That time over the 33-inchr high school hurdles is superior to the world-leading 13.44 by Yanique Thompson of Jamaica over the 30-inch Youth hurdles. Also showing well in the state meet was Allendra Watt of Pine Creek (Colorado Springs) who was second in the 5A 200 running 23.65 into a stiff 2-meter per second wind. Elise Cranny of Niwot turning in a quality triple, winning the 800 in 2:08.50, the 1,600 in 4:55.55 and the 3,200 in 10:38.99.

The Golden South Invitational in Orlando (Fl.) could not have hoped for more favorable conditions with legal-aiding winds yielding very generous performances. Daeshon Gordon of Boyd Anderson (Fort Lauderdale) was just outstanding with personal bests of 13.77 in the 100 hurdles and a Youth-leading 60.92 in the 400 hurdles. Sophomore Teahna Daniels was an 11.81 sprinter for Dr. Phillips (Orlando) last year but did not run for the school this year. Never the less she improved to 11.67 in her heat and then was not listed in the final, which was won by Deanna Hill of Lake Highlands Prep (Orlando) in a personal best of 11.63. Caitland Smith of Pelham (Al.) won the 200 with a big personal best of 23.88. Lloydricia Cameron of Northwestern (Miami) had personal bests of 46-3 in the shot put and 159-8 in the discus. The latter mark leads the nations Youth. Sophomore Javon Patterson of Boyd Anderson dropped his personal best by more than three seconds to 1:51.15 in finishing second in the 800. Ricky Faure of Rock Springs (Wy.) is the national Youth leader at 1:50.94. The two rank 9th and 10th on the world Youth list. Darius Watkins of Grovetown (Ga.) was fourth in the 100 at 10.67. He was sixth in the 200 final at 21.58 run into the wind but clocked a personal best of 21.43 in his heat.

The California Southern Section four-division finals were held at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut and also had the advantage of very favorable winds. Taking full advantage were Ariana Washington of Poly (Long Beach) and Myles Valentine of Upland. Washington, with 3.1 mps wind at her back, clocked 11.20 for 100 in Division I to become the 14th fastest prep of all time under any conditions. She came back in the 200 to run a personal best of 23.33 with a legal aiding 1.7 mps wind. Valentine, also in Division I, won the 100 in 10.48, personal best with a legal wind, and the 200 in 21.06—also with legal wind. Malik Roberson of Serra (Gardena), who has a legal best of 10.72 in the 100, won the Division IV race in a wind-aided 10.46. Luigi Colella of Thousand Oaks won the Division II pole vault with a personal best of 16-4 ¾. Margaux Jones of Redlands won the Division I long jump with a legal personal best of 20-2¾ and freshman Courtney Corrin of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) in Division IV had three legal jumps over 20 feet including a 20-9 effort that just missed her nation-leading 20-11. Just north in the Central Section finals in Clovis, Blake Haney of Stockdale won the 1,600 in 4:07.16 for the best Youth mark in the nation. It is worth 3:50.0 for 1,500 meters—well below what has taken to make the last two World Youth championship finals.

In other outstanding performances, Randall Cunningham of Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) won the state Division I high jump with a personal best of 7-3 ¼ to improve his world Youth-leading mark. Tiana Bonds of Centennial (Las Vegas) was second in the 300 hurdles at 41.84 for the second best Youth mark in the nation. Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson) was a double winner taking the shot put at 49-7¾ and the discus a5 154-5.

Oh, yes. Mary Cain of Bronxville (N.Y.) continued her total remaking of the high school, Youth and Junior record books with a stunning 4:04.62 second place finish in the Hi-Performance 1,500 at Occidental College in southern California to set national records in all three divisions.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be abl.e to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.

Athletes entering the U.S. Trials must qualify for the trials using marks made between June 18, 2012 and June 17, 2013.
