The Texas state meet, with following winds that very often was legal, provided many of the highlight over the past week. In the boys’ events, the 400 and the 800 led the way. Chris Platt of Willis won his third straight 2A division title in the 400 with a 46.64 for the best high school mark in the nation and the leading Youth mark in the world. Myles Marshall of Kingwood won the 5A division at 1:51.32 but the surprise was Robert Ford of Johnson (San Antonio) in third with a time of 1:51.50. Coming into the meet Ford’s best time was 1:57.12. The times for Marshall and Ford rank as the eighth and ninth Youth times in the world counting no more that two athletes per country—the maximum number a country can enter in any given event at the world youth championships. Andrew Hudson of Steele (Cibola) was third in the 4A 200 in 21.24. Kendall Sheffield of Marshall (Missouri City) was second in the 4A 110 hurdles in 13.85 for the second best Youth time in the nation. The hurdlers will be going over 36 inch hurdles at the WYC that would drop his time to about 13.55 that would rank fourth in the world. Sheffield was also second in the 300 hurdles at 37.50.

In the girls’ events, Alaysh’A Johnson of Spring won the 100 hurdles in a slightly wind-aided 13.52 and the 300 hurdles in a high school leading 41.24. Desiree Freier of Northwest (Justin) won the 5A pole vault at 13-9 to for the third best vault by a Youth performer in the world. Haley Teel of Gregory-Portland (Portland) won the 4A shot put at 48-3¼. The U.S. uses a 4-kg shot but the first time the WYC will be using a 3-kg shot. With about five-foot differences between the two orbs Teel’s effort would ranks seventh on the world Youth list. Anika Nehls of Germany leads the world at 56-10 ¾, which is just ahead of the U.S. Youth leader Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.), who has thrown 51-3½. Taylor Bennett of Spring was third in the 5A 100 at 11.65 and second in the 200 at 23.77. Both marks were slightly wind-aided.

The Arizona meet featured sprinters Ty Westbrook of Chandler for the girls and Paul Lucas of Mountain Pointe (Mesa). Westbrook had personal best of 11.45 in the 100 and 23.39 in the 100 to make her the No. 1 Youth in the world in the 100 and No. 2 in the 200. Matching Westbrook in wins, Paul Lucas took the Div. I boys 100 in 10.44 and the 400 at 47.48. He was second in the 200 at 21.10. His best of 20.99 in the 200 ranks him as the number one Youth in the world and his winning 100 ranks No. 2. Nate Rodriguez of Corona del Sol (Tempe) had very good triple finishing second in the 800 and 1,600, in 1:53.78 and 4:12.87, respectively, and third in the 3,200 at 9:10.61. Robert Grant of Brophy Prep (Phoenix) was second in the 300 hurdles at 36.88 for the second best Youth time in the nation. In the Georgia girl’s state meet, Shanel Burr of North Cobb (Kennesaw) won the 6A division 100 hurdles in 13.98 and Natisha Dixon of Wheeler (Marietta) was second at 14.16. Tatyana Hodnett of Tri Cities (East Point) won the 800 at 2:11.90.

The Loucks Games in White Plains (N.Y.) had a number of outstanding performances. Olivia Baker of Columbia (Maplewood, N.J.) won the 400 at 53.66 for the second best Youth time in the world. Laura Leff of West Genesse (Camillus) won the 2,000 steeplechase in a high school leading 6:52.56 to rank as the No. 7 Youth in the world. Jazmine Fray was third in the 800 at 2:10.61. Ryan Udvadia of Shoreham-Wading River (Shoreham) won the boys 3,200 in 9:02.05 and Christian Alvarado of Fairfield Prep (Fairfield, Ct.) was third at 9:09.00.

There were a number of other outstanding individual performances. Jazmine Quinn of Fort Dorchester (North Charleston, S.C.), who did not compete in 2012 due to injuries, won four events at the South Carolina state meet including the 100 hurdles where she ran 13.84 for the third best Youth mark in the U.S. That time would also rank her fourth in the world over the lower Youth hurdles. Quinn also took the 100 in 11.90, the 200 in 24.34 and the long jump at 19-7½.

In the boys sprints Myles Valentine of Upland (Ca.) has emerged as a prime challenge to Lucas.  At the Southern Section Division prelims he won his heat of the 200 in 21.05 that makes him the No. 3 Youth in the world. He also won his 100 heat in a wind-aided 10.36. It was his second 10.36 in the 100 in the last two weeks. The wind readings were 2.5 and 2.4. His legal best is 10.61. At the same meet, Kelsey Benoit of San Clemente (Ca.) popped a U.S. Youth leading 62-6 3/4 in the shot. That would be worth 65-6 with the lighter Youth shot and rank No. 5 in the world. Scotty Newton of Bakersfield (Ca.) won the Central Section North Area long jump at 24-2 ¾ to rank as the No. 5 Youth jumper in the world.

Chyna Ries of Washington (Denver, Co.), in just her second outdoor meet of the year, jumped 20-2½ in the long jump to rank at the No. 4 Youth in the world behind U.S. high school and  world Youth leader, Courtney Corrin of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City, Ca.), who has four meets over 20 feet with a best of 20-11.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
