Also, if you are planning to run the 1,500, 3000 or the long hurdles you must have a qualifying mark IN THOSE EVENTS. Beginning this week the concentration will be on athletes who have bettered the IAAF qualifying standards. No longer will athletes be listed who have not met that standard. The excepts are the 1,500, 3,000 and 400 hurdles. Because those events are rarely run in the U.S. the 1,500 and 1,600, 3,000 and 3,200 and 300 and 400 hurdles times for nonqualifiers will be listed as a point of reference. Athletes who have improved since the last report are in bold face.
In the past two weeks six state meets were held along with the Texas state regionals and the Penn Relays. Unfortunately the weatherman did not cooperate in the southeastern U.S. where most of the state meets were held. In Florida where the state meets are split over two weekened the 2A division was two weeks ago and they took full advantage. Deanna Hill of Lake Highlands Prep (Orlando) and Diamond Spaulding of America Heritage (Plantation) split the sprint races. Hill prevailed in the 100, 11.72 to 11.76 while Spaulding took the 200, 23.59 to 23.65. Stefani Kerrison of Jones (Orlando) had a breakthrough with her 13.86 win in the 100 hurdles. On the same weekend, in the 1A, Darrielle McQueen won the long jump at 19-7 and Christian Philpott won the 200 at 21.50. Both are from North Florida Christian (Tallahassee). For the second straight year Xavier Atkins of Spruce Creek (Port Orange), the national Youth leader at 10.50, missed the regionals. One athletes who did perform well in the 4A state finals was Krystal Sparling of St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale). She second in the 200 in 23.86 after running 23.78 a week earlier in the regional mee and second in the 100 at 11.86. Sparling best of 11.55 came in a district meet. Kendall Ellis won the 400 in 54.96 after running 53.80 a week earlier in a regional meet. Daeshon Gordon of Boyd Anderson won the 300 hurdles in 42.16 and was second in the 100 hurdles in 13.99.
Even with the bad weather all it did was slow down Marlon Humphrey of Hoover (Al.) In the state 6A division he ran 13.53 in the heats of the100 hurdles before clocking 13.86 in to a 3.4 meters per second wind in the final. He also took the 300 hurdles in 36.33 and the 400 in 47.91. He is the national Youth leader at 13.38 and 35.60. Caitland Smith of Pelham won the 100 in 11.87 and the 400 in 55.97. In the Texas regionals, Chris Platt of Willis won the 4A region 3 meet 400 in 47.01 for the best Youth mark in the nation. In the 110 hurdles, Kendall Sheffield of Marshall (Missouri City) won the 4A regional in 13.88 and Chevis Armstead of DeSoto won the 5A region 3 meet in 14.07 for the second and third best Youth times in the nation behind Humphrey. Sheffield also won the 300 hurdles in 37.56. Paolo Benavides of Franklin (El Paso) improved to 16-3 in the pole vault at the 5A region 1 meet. I’Shunique Hamilton of American Heritage (Cedar Hill) won the 5A region 1 100 in 11.81. Olamide Olowe of El Dorado (El Paso) won the 5A region 1 meet in 54.37 and Jarra Owens of Bush (Richmond) was third in the 5A region 3 meet at 54.43. Haley Teel of Gregory-Portland (Portland) won the 4A region 1 discus at 156-1 to go along with her best of 48-3 in the shot. The Penn Relays featured the 3,000. Christian Alvarado of Fairfield Prep (Fairfield, Ct.) was third in the boys race at 8:26.25 and Kyle Lawrence of Don Bosco Tech (Ramsey, N.J.) was sixth at 8:27.8 as six athletes bettered the IAAF standard. Courtney Smith of Unionville (Kennett Square, Pa.) was third in girls race at 9:38.40 to lead six runners under the IAAF standard.
Since the last report there have been six new national Youth leaders. Ricky Faure of Rock Springs (Wy.), the Youth leader 800 leader prior to 2013, won the Taylorsville Inv. In 1:51.78 and Matthew Moton won the Jesuit Twilight Invitational 1,500 in 3:54.13. Nathaniel Moore of Castro Valley (Ca.) won the Sacramento MOC triple jump 49-10 and Matthew Zajac of E.C.Glass (Lynchburg, Va.) opened up some space bet.ween himself and his competitors in the discus with a 190-6 throw at the Milestat.com Invitational. Among the girls, Allendra Watt of Pine Creek (Colorado Springs, Co.) ran 53.77 in the 400 at the Liberty Bell Invitational. She was also third in the 100 in 11.73. Mary Cain of Bronxville (N.Y.) was third in the Re: Run Invitational 800 in San Diego but the absence of a curb will prevent the mark from being excepted by the IAAF. In addition there were number of new faces in the top three. Ranking second for the girls are Elise Cranny of Niwot (Co.) with a 4:15.07 in finishing third in her section of the 1,500 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.) won the State southern regional division 1 discus at 157-0 and Desiree Freier of Northwest (Jutsin, Tx.) cleared 13-7 in the pole vault one week before the regionals. Texas now has ten vaulteres who have bettered the IAAF standard of. 12-1½. For the boys, Frank Kurtz of Heritage (Brentwood, Ca.) won the Sacramento MOC 400 in 47.02 to rank just behind.Platt and Hawk Griffin of Little Elm (Tx.) cleared 16-6 in the pole vault at the Bullfrog
Invitational to rank third.
Final Note: With a month of State meets and post season meets such as the New Balance Outdoor nationals yet to come, the lists are likely to look much different in mid-June then they do today.
U.S. Trials Qualifying Information
The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...
The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF. In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?
Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.
A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
