FEBRUARY 7th Report

To be eligible to compete you must 1) be a U.S. citizen with a valid U.S. passport (begin application process now; it takes six weeks and is good for 10 years); 2) be born in 1996 or 1997; and 3) have met two qualifying standards. To qualify for the World Youth Championships, marks must be made between October 1, 2012 and June 26. To qualify for the U.S. Trials marks must be made between June 18, 2012 and June 17, 2013.  The standards for both meets are listed below with each event.

MARY CAIN MOVES INTO UNCHARTED TERRITORY

The major part of the indoor season has just begun and there have already been some truly outstanding performances—none more so that by the incomparable Mary Cain.

However, before we get the really good stuff, there are some very important changes have taken place in the last two years for both the U.S. Trials for the World Youth Championships and the WYC. The biggest change has to do with the qualifying period. In the past athletes could meet the IAAF qualifying standards over a one and one-half year period. For the 2013 WYC, marks must be achieved between October 1, 2012 and July 1, 2013 (The U.S. set its final date at June 26). For the first time performances at the U.S. Trials can be used to meet the IAAF qualifying standards. The remainder of changes has to do with the contested events. In the past, the girls shot and hammer weighted 4-kg. And the javelin weighted 600 grams. The weights will now be 3-kg and 500 grams. This mirrors the boy’s events where the weights are lighter than used at the junior/high school level. Events and weights at the U.S. trials will mirror those run at the WYC, except for the hurdles. At the U.S. Trials, the boys will run the high school heights, (39 inches for the 110 hurdles and 36 inches for the 400 hurdles), which is three inches higher than those run at the WYC. The girls will run the high school height for the 100 hurdles, which is three inches higher than those run at the WYC.

Now lets get to the ‘really good stuff ’.

Mary Cain, who ran for Bronxville (N.Y.) in 2012 but is now being coached by Alberto Salazar, has put together more high quality Youth (under 18 years old),  high school and Junior (under 20) performance, in a three-week (22 days) period, then any other prep athlete in memory. She closed out that period in the New Balance Elite two-mile last weekend in Boston with a third-place finish. Her time of 9:38.68 broke the world and American Junior record of 9:55.71 set by Lindsey Welch of Virginia in 1982 and the high school record of 9:55.92 set by Melody Fairchild of Boulder (Co.) in 1991.  She was also clocked at 9:04.51 for 3,000 metes taking down both the American junior and high school records. Kim Mortimer of Kansas State held the old AJR at 9:16.59 set in 2000 and Fairchild held the old high school record at 9:17.4 set in 1991.

Cain’s two marks also bettered the high school outdoor records of 9:08.6 for 3,000 set by Lynn Bjorklund of Los Alamos (N.M) in 1975 and the two mile record of 9:52.03 set by Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks (Ca.) in 1996. Cain also has the high school all-conditions best for 3,000 with her 9:02.10 set January 12, when her record run began at the Washington Preview meet on the over-size track at Dempsey Arena in Seattle. All distance runners need to realize that to meet the IAAF qualify standards in the 1,500 and 3000, only times at those distances will be accepted. Times for 1,600 meters, one mile and 3,200 meters will not be accepted. Also no times on indoor tracks over 200 will be accepted. The U.S. Trials does accept qualifying times at 1,600, mile, 3,200 and two miles for the 1,500 and 3,000.

Two weeks later, on January 26, Cain stepped on the regulation 200-meter track at the Armory in New York in the New Balance Games, and runs 4:32.78 to finish third in the Invitational Elite Mile. That shreds the 42-year old high school record of 4:38.5 set by Debbie Heald of La Mirada (Cal) in 1972 and betters the outdoor record of 4:35.24 set by Polly Plumer of University (Irvine, Ca.) in 1982. Enroute, Cain clocked 4:16.11 for 1,500 to break both the indoor high school and American Junior record of 4:18.9, set Lynn Jennings of Bromfield (Harvard, Ma.) in 1978. Cain has the Youth outdoor record at 4:11.01 set last year in the World Junior championship in Barcelona.

The big surprise for the boys has been the emergence of Devin King of Sumner (Kentwood, La.) in the pole vault. The junior improved his best by more that two feet with a winning 16-6 ½ at the LSU Invitational. Two years ago at the WYC, Jacob Blankenship of Lincoln (Gahanna, Oh.) cleared 16-6 ¾ to finish third. Three week later King backed that up with a 16-2. In addition to King,  Barrett Path of Klein Oak (Houston, Tx.) had a personal best of 15-10 at the Vault Summit and Todd Uckermark of Warwick Valley (Warwick, N.Y.) also PRed with a 15-4 at Hispanic Games at the Armory. In all seven vaulters have cleared 15-0. Over the last two WYC meets it took a 15-7 average to make the final.

In other boys field events, junior Devon Patterson of Williamsville South (Williamsville, N.Y.) has taken the major step forward in the shot put with a 60-4 ¾ effort at the Rock & Role Throw Off in Lancaster (N.Y.). Last year he has a best of just 56-6 ¼. Spencer Ross of Mahwah (N.J.) bettered Andrew Trumbetti of Demarest (N.J.) 58-8½ to 58-6¾ in a league meet to better the IAAF standard of 58-1 with the 5-kg shot. That converts to over 61 feet with the 5-kg shot. Over the last two WYC it has taken an average of 60-6 ¾ to reach the WYC final. Isaiah Moore of Cummings (Burlington, N.C.) has bettered the IAAF qualifying mark in long jump at 23-10 ½ and John Warren of Killeen (Tx.) has done the same in the triple jump with a 48-10½ effort. Warren also has a best of 23-3¼ in the long jump. Rubin Owens of LeRoy (N.Y.) is the only high jumper to better the IAAF standard with a 6-8.

Action has been fairly quiet on the track. Junior Richard Rose of Boys & Girls (Brooklyn) opened the season in the 400 at the Armory in December with a 48.87 and confirmed that last week with a 1:19.05 in finishing second in the high school 600 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory, to break the sophomore class record and rank tenth on the all-time high school list. Darius Watkins of Grovetown (Ga.), had best of 10.76 and 21.61 last summer, but based on his indoor times of 6.42 for 55 meters and 21.82, those marks will be short-lived. Sophomore Ryan Clark of Banneker (College Park, Ga.) has run 21.73 on an oversized track but last year had a best of 21.22 and 46.89. Ricky Faure of Rock Springs (Wy.), the top returning Youth 800 runner at 1:51.66, ran 1:52.96 last week at the 442-meter Olympic Oval at Kearns (Ut.). Anthony Russell of Henderson (West Chester, Pa.) is the 3,000 leader at 8:38.01 and Kyle Levermore of Don Bosco Tech (Ramsey, N.J.) is the two-mile leader at 9:17.90.

Marlon Humphrey of Hoover (Al.) had an outstanding set of performances at the Alabama State meet with the best mark in the nation at 60 hurdles at 7.80 and the third best mark in 400 at 48.11 as well as winning the 60 dash in 6.89. Last year he had best of 13.96 and 37.11 in hurdles. Davon Anderson of Summerville (S.C.) ranks No. 2 in the nation in the hurdles at 7.88.  Isaiah Moore of Cummings (Burlington, N.C.), who ran 13.94 over the 110 hurdles in 2012, ranks No. 2 in the nation at 55 hurdles with a 7.41 but is chasing Grant Holloway of Grassfield (Chesapeake, Va.), who has already set a national freshman record of 7.35.

Dior Hall of Washington (Denver, Co.), who ran 13.18 for the 100-meter 33-inches two years ago and reached the World Junior finals last year, has limited her indoor action to her home state but has still run 8.35 for the 60 hurdles. Last year her 8.19 ranked second on the all-time high school list. Freshman Makenzie Dunmore of McEachern (Powder Springs, Ga.) is the surprise leader in the 200 with her 24.72 at the Youth Invitational in Birmingham (Al.). Last year she ran 23.94. However, sophomore Alexandra Watt of Pine Creek (Colorado Springs, Co.) has run 24.33 on an oversize and has an outdoor best of 24.11. Olivia Baker of Columbia (Maplewood, N.J.) is the high school leader at 55.02 and Emma Gallagher of Garden City (N.Y.) is second at 55.31. Gallagher has also run 1:30.35 for 600 meters at the Armory to lead the nation to rank tenth all-time high school list. Both will be looking to go longer with outdoor best of best of 2:10.41 and 2:09.80, respectively. Jazemine Fray of Kellenberg (Uniondale, N.Y.) is the indoor leader in the 800 at 2:10.96.

Sophomore Alexa Efraimson of Camas (Wa.), running on the oversize track at the Washington Preview meet, was second in section two of the 3,000 at 9:31.18. That time would have placed ninth at the 2011 WYC. Bella Burda of Arlington (La Grangeville, Pa.), another sophomore, has been a pleasant surprise with a 9:45.6 to win the Northern County championships. Only Cain and Efraimson have run faster. Laura Leff of West Genesee (Camillus, N.Y.) ranks second behind Cain in the 1,500 at 4:33.96 and that means she has returned to the same form that had her running 6:51.28 for the 2,000 steeplechase in 2011 as a freshman.

In the girls field events, Desiree Freier of Northwest (Judson, Tx.) is the national Youth leader at with her 13-6 pole vault at the Aledo Invitational. Meagan Gray of Hays (Buda, Tx.), at 12-8, leads seven other vaulters who have already bettered the IAAF standard of 12-1½. In 2011 it took 12-7½ to make the WYC final. Haley Teel of Gregory-Portland (Portland, Tx.), at 43-10¾, is the only athlete to better the qualifying standard of 43-7¾. Last year she had a best of 46-2.  In 2011 it took 43-4 ½ to make the final. The weight for the shot put at the WYC has changed from 4-kg to 3-kg. The difference between the two weights is about five feet. Keteurah Orji of Mount Olive (Flanders, N.J.) is the national leader in both the lone jump at 19-9 and triple jump at 40-7. Both marks better the IAAF qualifying standard. Cidae’a Woods of Winslow (Atco, N.J.) has also bettered the long jump standard with a 19-7 ¾ effort.
The Third WYC report will come out February 27 and should provide a substantional  improvement in marks with the indoor season in full swing and outdoor action getting underway in Texas, Forida and California.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes, At this time the exact number has not been set but it could be between 45 and 55, which was the size of the 2009 team.

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF. It should be noted that the events where athletes have met just the IAAF standards but have not been named to the previous teams, are the events where the U.S. is in greatest need of developing its athletes. Let’s hope that the USATF will be able find a way to send all qualified athletes to all world championships. These athletes are at an age (16-17) where they are making a decision whether to continue with track and field or gravitate to other sports. It makes a difference.

With a full season of competition to come, the U.S. has 26 girls and 25 boys, with a limit of two per event, that have achieved performances in 2012 that would place them in the finals of previous World Youth championships. However, they will need to repeat those performances between October 1, 2012 and June 26, 2013 and place in the first two at the U.S. Trials.  It is very difficult to speculate on the progress of athletes at this age, especially the boys, but it is very possible that as many as 55 athletes, with a limit of two per event, will achieve performance that would place them in finals. There were about 50 athletes that finished in the top two at the 2011 U.S. that had shown the ability to reach the WYC finals.  The IAAF provides funds for 20 athletes with U.S.A. Track and Field funding the remainder of the team.

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
